5 stars to Volume 5! Loved all the "history" with this one. I will be writing a comprehensive review of the entire series to be posted with Vol. 6
Another slam dunk for Ania Ahlborn. Or should I saw this was a slam dunk already because I am reading her bibliography way out of order and she wrote this legend before the other books I have read? Either way... this BOOK IS EVERYTHING!
Ahlborn crafts a story of a murderous family in Appalachia with a lot of secrets. It's a testament to her writing that we are able to even feel sympathy for one or more of them as the story proceeds. But I found myself really rooting for our main character and the things he has to endure are heartbreaking, both mentally and physically.
This story is gut-wrenching. It is haunting. It is beautiful. It is fiery and gruesome. It is bananas. It is AWESOME. 5 stars!

I am extremely picky when it comes to reading any sort of book about zombies because between movies, TV, and books, we are definitely in a saturated world. For decades. So when I chose to read this one, it was because I saw in it something special and unique. And I was not wrong! T.L. Bodine has crafted a world where being infected/being undead has been "somewhat cured" by a drug called Lazarus. But you have to keep taking your meds or you might go off the deep end. There are also "home" and facilities for those infected to get better care/attention than they may receive at home with their loved ones trying to do their own 9-to-5 jobs, schools, etc.
We take a huge turn when a son who has put his life on hold to care for his undead father has a car wreck and ends up in the same place. Dead. This story has compassion. It has heart. It is unique and also can be seen as a reflection for some current political times.
4 stars to River of Souls as it kept me entertained and ready for more the whole time I was reading.

To sum up, Infested is a novella where bugs become way bigger and more aggressive than they should be. And in a serious, people-murdering, end-of-the-world kind of way. Certain bugs have always freaked me out a bit and so to see them bigger and in larger groups was pretty irksome and made my skin crawl. Just imagining seeing people covered in giant mosquitoes to where you can't even see their skin is enough to make me run for the hills. And do not get me started on the humongous roaches.
This is a quick read with fun characters and enough action to keep you pushing through your fears of creepy crawlies. I had a fun time even though I kept scratching myself because the imagery in this book is REAL and it constantly felt like I had bugs crawling ALL over me.
4 stars and I would love to read more from Carol Gore!

Coming out of the "New Year, New Me" phase that seems to have afflicted the general population but has since been forgotten, I was intrigued with the idea of this book. On the surface, it is about a woman who is unhappy with her weight and thinks that all her unhappiness, the death of another, her failed relationships, etc can all be attributed back to that weight. But dig deeper and this is a true tale of psychological horror that includes self love and acceptance. Sometimes it takes the most courage to overcome your worst enemy: yourself.
I enjoyed the way this story read -it was almost as if I was reading an episode of The Twilight Zone. Our protagonist knows something is afoot but she cannot quite figure out what it is. She keeps finding herself doing the same things, stuck in this hazy, delirious routine. She knows it's not right, but it's almost like when you are dreaming and can't make yourself wake up. I also had a lot of vibes akin to the movie Triangle... what is real and what is an illusion?
Then we get some demonic goodness! This novella read quickly, was highly entertaining, and will be a good excuse for me to not go to the gym for that perfect body but will serve as a reminder that I am good enough, dangit! 4 stars - extremely recommended. Thanks to the author for the review copy in exchange for honest feedback!

"Forget the Four Horsemen, Lilith is assembling the Four Whores."
E.V. Knight knows how to write! The language is gorgeous, evocative, and the character development brought on are quite impressive. Who needs the Four HorseMEN when you can have equally, if not more, kick ass women leading the charge?! It felt like I was reading an episode of Supernatural in a sense - especially when they took to the religious side of their show's plotline. I had a lot of fun with this one - as the title MIGHT suggest, be prepared for some heavy, graphic sex. That did not bother me in the least, though, because it actually isn't something you read about all the time and it's fun to change things up!
My struggle with this book was finding a character to connect to that I could cheer on. I liked everyone well enough, but no one ever spoke TO ME on a deeper level. And then trying to follow the various sub-plots/storylines meant that we hopped around too much for me to build that character connection.
All in all, this is a solid 3 stars and it's a book that I am not sure I would have picked up before... but am so glad that I did. We get a great insight into the writing style and prowess of E.V. Knight and I am ready for more! Thank you, Erin and RDS Press for sending this book for a #nightwormsbookparty!
