This was a solid, fun, and quick read that left me thoroughly spooked! I love a good ghost story and this one had yet another supernatural twist. A perfect October read!

Be warned- the main character is a tad bit of a numb nut and you WILL yell at her a few times. There are a few things that really feel that they were only included to help the plot make sense, but overall it was a great read!

I had a lot of fun reading this book! This is my second from Darcy Coates and I enjoy that she has now delivered the perfect amount of tension twice.

This book was a particularly fun read as you couldn’t quite figure it out: was she seeing things? Is she being haunted? Is someone actually there?

Similar to The Haunting of Ashburn House, the ghostie isn’t what you expect it to be! Another similarity is your frequent questioning of the main character’s survival instincts. Hers, however, I can understand better as she lost all memories of the car crash she was in and the events leading up to it.

If you’re looking for a true ghost story- this isn’t for you as *SPOILER ALERT* :

They are significantly closer to zombies than ghosts. Mutated humans with a focus on finding a way to sate their hunger.

Now, I will say that I do think the mutations went a bit to far imo and kinda took me a bit out of the story.

Similarly- the love interest angle felt a little bit forced, but I did enjoy it! I just feel that the character of Dorran (and his mother) made it feel as though we were further back in time than we were.

For the items mentioned above- 3.5 rounded to a 4.

This book gets three stars because DESPITE the things I am about to say, it was still a fun read.

My biggest complaint is the overuse of the word ‘girl’ followed by the overuse of the word ‘juicy’.

Dialogue where every character calls everyone ‘girl’ is absolutely one of my BIGGEST pet peeves in books. Especially when it just does not fit the character and it really took me out of multiple scenes in this book. Calling people ‘girl’ in books always makes the dialogue seem stilted, and it was especially bad in this book.

Onto ‘juicy’. I CAN IGNORE THE USE OF JUICY IN SPICY SCENES ONE IN A BOOK. But multiple times? From both characters? No!

I mean, I still read this in a singe sitting and its fun in that delightfully trashy way and YES I liked the MMC and actually felt that the FMCs issues with her family served the plot well.

Just… juicy.

I’ll say that at least this one is less focused on breasts… but it didn’t feel very horror and the reason for the MCs powers? Nope nope nope.

it’s a good book

So I enjoyed this book and I think the spice is done well. However, I did skim past stuff and didn’t miss anything so… enjoyable read, will look into her other work, just not a GREAT book.

I get that there are only so many pages in this book, but it was hard for me to care at all about any of the characters. It was too quick of a read to be honest- not a damn thing stuck with me or made an imprint.

Someone else said it read as if the author expected it to be made into a movie and I completely agree with that.

No actual rating on this one as I DNFed this book on page 161. Forgive me, but I listened to BookTok when I should have just listened to my gut. The fact of the matter is that there is better werewolf smut on Ao3. And by better I mean- has significantly more consent, plot, and character development.

I want my money back.

Spoiler Liz continues to furiously struggle beneath my huge form trying to get away from us. I’m doing my best not to bruise her little body, but she’s putting up one hell of a fight. I’m ashamed at how much I crave this. I don’t enjoy her fear, but the need to punish and condition her? I’m a sick, sadistic fuck for how much I desire just that.

This girl who has been brutalized in the past definitely needs to be conditioned and punished. This entire book is a walking red flag and I think I’ll head to Ao3 now.
