 Overall Thoughts:
⁕ I highly recommend reading this book immediately after finishing the second one. I waited a month or so in between and it was hard for me to remember a lot of important details and world-building that are crucial to the story.

⁕ I don’t know how it’s possible, but the character development in this one was EVEN BETTER than the previous two novels. I especially appreciated how Jemisin delves deeper into the main characters’ impact on each other.

⁕ The way that Jemisin explores the binary of supremacy and oppression, how one cannot exist without the other, is just... wow. This story will not leave me for some time.

⁕ Because the first two books of this series were SO good, I was worried that the ending wouldn’t live up to my expectations. Thankfully, it was satisfying on both a smaller, character-based level and on a larger scale, plot-driven level.

 Overall Thoughts:
⁕ I’ve heard a lot of folks compare this book to Knives Out, and I have to agree with that assessment. If you’re looking for an atmospheric read with that aesthetic, this is the book for you!

⁕ This book was a little cheesy at times, but in an endearing way. Barnes develops the characters really well, so even when they were being overdramatic I still loved them.

⁕ There’s one “plot twist” that’s pretty obvious early on, but the main mystery of the book was absolutely suspenseful.

⁕ There are a few heavier scenes surrounding death, guilt, and abuse, but in general this was a fast-paced, easy read.

 Overall Thoughts:
⁕ This book is more an exploration of the characters’ faiths than a typical apocalyptic adventure. It was an unexpected and different perspective to the genre that was interesting to read, even if I didn’t necessarily relate to or understand it all.

⁕ I LOVE that McWilliams also included Beth’s (Agnes’ sister) narrative! I think she captured the sibling relationship perfectly, and their contrasting personalities added depth to the text.

⁕ Agnes’ abilities sometimes felt too powerful in that they prevented her from experiencing a lot of obstacles/conflict that would have made the story more interesting.

 Overall Thoughts:
⁕ Like a lot of her other books, you don’t really understand what’s going on at first. Jemisin slowly feeds you info and keeps you hooked on the mystery of it.

⁕ It seems like SO much research went into this book in regards to the Burroughs of NYC and their distinct cultures and institutions. It was such an interesting read from the perspective of someone who’s never been there.

⁕ Jemisin flawlessly stitches together multiple perspectives in the third person; which is super impressive on its own, but even more so given the complex topics discussed and the varying identities of her characters.

⁕ A lot of the magic/superpower elements in this book are based in metaphysical and conceptual realms. It’s probably just cuz I’m new to Sci-Fi, but I had trouble envisioning these things sometimes.

Overall Thoughts:
⁕ The world-building in this book isn’t ever fully explained. Pearson references the histories and practices of multiple countries but never fleshes them out. Because this book takes place in the same world as her Remnant series, I worry she banks too much on the hope that folks will already have knowledge from that.

⁕ The main characters are very one-dimensional and defined by singular traits.

⁕ This book does a lot of telling and not showing. Sooo many events were described passively by the characters rather than showing the reader how they reacted in the moment.

⁕ The saving quality of this book is its building of anticipation and mystery, especially towards the end.

Overall Thoughts:
⁕ This book is so balanced in terms of pacing and mood. I was hooked from the very first page and experienced every emotion from grief to tenderness to humor while reading.

⁕ Not only is this book littered with the best YA tropes, but Deonn does a BRILLIANT job of analyzing them in the context of race, class, and gender. I was particularly struck by her exploration of  the knights of the round table in relation to white supremacy and injustice.

⁕ I LOVE how well developed the non-romantic relationships are, especially between the MC and her dad and best friend.

⁕ My only complaint (and it’s a weak one) is that there are a lot of characters with three letter names and I kept getting them mixed up 😂

Overall Thoughts:
⁕ You don’t need prior knowledge of Greek mythology to enjoy this book. However, as someone who studied Greek, I have mixed feelings. I was overjoyed to see a new take on beloved characters but also annoyed at times by the copious amounts of exposition.

⁕ This book is a slow build without much upfront action. Because of the nature of Circe’s position (being forced into solitude), a lot of major events are explained to her (and the reader) in a passive fashion.

⁕ The character development is on point. Circe is a completely different person by the end of the book, but it never feels unbelievable or forced.

Overall Thoughts:
⁕ This is the most atmospheric book I have ever read! The world of the circus is rich and alive on every page.

⁕ Because the structure of the book is nonlinear and covers multiple characters, the plot was hard to keep track of at times.

⁕ The characters’ development could be A LOT stronger. I was surprised by some of their actions and also the evolution of the main relationship.

⁕ The ending was beautiful, but the means by which the author got there were not fully-fledged. There is some unexplained magic and a few plot holes that weren’t resolved.

Overall Thoughts:
⁕ My favorite element of the book was the added narration of Katherine. It added a layer of depth to see the events of the story through multiple perspectives.

⁕ There’s a huge ellipsis of time in the middle of the book and most of it is never explained. Consequently, it feels like we miss out on significant moments of character development.

⁕ I was extremely disappointed in Justina’s use of harmful stereotypes when describing Asian immigrants.

Overall Thoughts:
⁕ I didn’t totally believe the romance between Tamlin and Feyre (please don’t hate me for saying this, I know a lot of people on here ship them hard). I wanted a more concrete moment that changed their dynamic from “enemies” to potential lovers, but I just didn’t get it.

⁕ The relationship between Feyre and her family is real and raw and beautiful! Ugh, I could scream about the complexity of Nesta all day.

⁕ Maas does an excellent job of creating a sense of mystery around the larger conflicts of the story. I had a blast trying to piece together all the clues that are littered in the text.
