A pretty intense read, not something you can read a couple of pages at a time. I found that I enjoyed it much more when I was able to read a whole chunk of it in one go.

Having grown up on Roald Dahl's fanciful children's stories I was excited to read about the man behind them. And really surprised at what a crusty man he actually was! I was blown away by his life story, told with humour (the excerpts from his letters were priceless) and reverence. I read one review complaining that the author inserted himself too much in the narrative and that consequently he jumped around chronologically. I didn't find this to be the case- the author only met Dahl in 1985, 5 years before he died so he wasn't around for most of his life. I cried at the end- as one is wont to do when one becomes attached to the people you're reading about. I really enjoyed the deeper read into his children's stories as well- I understand them so much more now and feel like they are begging for another read.
All in all, an excellent read! A must if you loved Dahl's books as a kid!
