2,5/5. At first I was finding this one quite funny. The guy dies in a stupid accident, then find himself in Heaven and didn’t like Heaven because everything is very lame out there, etc. I liked the absurdity of it all and fin did funny. For the first third. After that, well, the humor didn’t works has well, it became repetitive, it try to introduce a real plot into the story which didn’t work well or was interesting that much, etc. A cool concept that works well in the beginning, but that didn’t pass the test on the long run.
I had higher expectation from this one. The concept is good, the illustrations also are, but the content is a bit light/easy for me. This book presents a lot of monster from a variety of cultural reference (movie, literature, sometimes both, and more). The monster is presented in a short story and after you have some information on where it came from, in other words, the story behind the story. It might be good for kids you want to learn about monster and discover news one, but for me, even if I know I wasn’t the targeted reader, who is interest in horror for two decades, well... I didn’t discover much new stuff here. I still give it a decent rating, since it was clearly for a younger public. I think it is a good book, but I also think it has the potential to be much better!!
Nope this one was definitely not for me. It's an unique and original children book both by its writing style and artwork, but it just didn't get to me. The illustrations a bit much, but the story and the writing didn't please me. Too bad!
1,5/5. I have some problems with this book. First I would classify more in the YA, and not in the science-fiction. Second the message/moral that it try to share is weird/wrong or badly explain. That being said, the writing is alright, a bit above the average for a YA book, but the plot, characters and world building felt into the clichés of the genre and that hurt the rating. The young women who came out of nowhere, to become great and important, that had strange vision/dream of something and that she felt is really important. There is also the mixed writing, going from narrative to various reports, adds, message, and more, that was original a while ago but that we too often see now to classify it as original and that could break the rhythm more then anything, not badly use here but it didn't really bring something more. Overall this book felt like a check-list book where the author have some «in» or actual stuff to put into his book and put them in no matter what. Maybe slightly above average YA book, but not worth it in my opinion!
This is the perfect learning to read book. The story is interesting enough, there are a lot of repetitive sentences, so that will help kids remember and learn words and structures. There is also a part at the end to help with phonology, fluency, vocabulary, etc. So parents can help their kids even more to develop their reading skills. My only two very little minus here are, first the young girl look old to me, I don’t think she look likes a child at all, and the mother was so annoying always wanting to go faster, quickly, and I have work to do. But maybe that’s all me and anyway it didn’t diminish the quality of the book. Good job!
2,5/5. At first I like the originality of it but the story bored me pretty quickly. Just too light for my taste i guess. It has some potential and the illustrations are beautiful, i really like the style, but the humor and storyline, even if not bad, didn't had enough substance for me to totally enjoying it!
Casual teenagers story mixed with some «thriller» elements. The casual life part was good enough, the characters and the school life settings were believable and well done in my opinion. Unfortunately the thrilling part fell a bit short. It felts force by time, the conclusion of it all wasn't satisfying, and the big «drama» the beginning promise just didn't deliver. An okay read but just nothing extraordinary, it should have stay simple and focus more on the teens life and it probably would have been better.
Wasn't for me. The story let me down and I completely hate the illustrations style. Hope others will like it but I definitely didn't! Sorry...
2,5/5. I like the concept of a story that shows kids that if they fight for something they can achieved thing. The going out for a cause, something you believe in, can change things and make the word change. Unfortunately the story present that boys that fight for ice cream in his neighborhood. Of all the thing he could have campaign for... I would have like it better if the debate would have been on something greater and more socially important!
Really a cute story of a young girl visiting her mom that is hospitalize and useful to explain the reality of the hospital to young children. As a kid my mom was hospitalize for a short time, but i still remember hit really well, so I understand how this may be strange and stressful for a child. This book does a good job making it simple and less intimidating. The people at the hospital, in the book, look way too happy and fun to be realist from my personal experience, but that is still a good book that I like!
