mysterious

Iiiiiiii...don't really know how I feel about this.

[eta] After thinking about it overnight, I'm dropping my rating half a star. It's not even that I disliked it, but that so much of it didn't make sense. The cast of characters was SO small, and we don't ever learn what happened to half of them.

State of the Onion

Julie Hyzy

DID NOT FINISH: 9%

Realized after a few chapters that I'm definitely not in the mood for this, and probably never will be.

What's a Ghoul to Do?

Victoria Laurie

DID NOT FINISH: 10%

I'm not saying I think the way Steven's accent is portrayed is offensive, but also I cannot make myself read a whole book of it.

The Quiche and the Dead

Kirsten Weiss

DID NOT FINISH: 24%

DNF, didn't care for the voice or the writing style. This was the second book in as many days that referred to a femme-presenting person as "blond," but this one didn't have anything else going for it, and that was one of the last straws. I realize that French is pointlessly gendered, but if I read "blond," I picture a man. 🤷

If I had kept reading, this would have been a half star or less.
fast-paced
Plot or Character Driven: A mix
Loveable characters: Yes
Diverse cast of characters: Yes
Flaws of characters a main focus: Complicated

Idek why I'm giving this 3 stars. Probably nostalgia. I read this trilogy over and over in high school (I distinctly remember knocking this one out in three days and just L O V I N G it), but that was almost 30y ago now. Mid-40s me found it tiresome and a struggle to keep going. If I weren't doing a buddy read with one of my besties so we could watch the show together, I probably would have skimmed or not even finished at all. Because there are several parts in this book that are a SLOG to get through.
