I just loved this so much. Was not expecting it to make me laugh as much as it did (the tears were expected, though). The ending was a bit rushed, but I appreciated what it was going for.
Graphic: Racial slurs, Racism, Slavery, Torture
Moderate: Sexual assault
Angry mothers raise daughters fierce enough to fight wolves. Do you understand?
Almost done reading these aloud to the 13y/o, and have read this one the fewest times (for obvious reasons). So happy to finally have explicit queer rep in the series (still p sure Nita isn't entirely het, but we'll see how that pans out), and cried while reading about that thing that happens towards the end.
I got annoyed with the main character's voice almost immediately. Side-eyed the dreamcatcher wind chimes. And then finally quit at "even a magical haven like Thistle Grove got decent reception and Wi-Fi most of the time"...the fuck does she think WiFi is? That it just springs from the aether?
Too annoyed already to keep going.

Second read, still loved it so so so much. This feels a natural ending for the books, but I guess Fforde has said he's down to write another. I will be thrilled to pick it up when and if he does.
An anguishing travelogue across California in the 1997 that never was.
I had to read it slow because it tied my stomach in knots while I was reading. One of the most deeply melancholy things I have read in a long time.

This was fine. Mostly I just needed a break from the sad lesbian LitFic I've been reading.
