13y/o: Remind me of my options for ratings again?

Me: Whole numbers and quarter increments.

13y/o: 4¼

Me: So you like this one less than the last?

13y/o: Yeah. It felt like a LOT of buildup, and then was resolved really fast.

Me: And also, this is the third Jack and Jill book out of five.

13y/o: Seanan has favourites. Well. One favourite. And it's Jack. I really wanted Jill's PoV! What was she doing during all of this? Why don't we know?

I really thought this was just going to be these three novellas and that was it, so was looking forward to a short series. More questions asked than answers given in this one, which leads me to believe it's planned to be a longer series.

This seems to be the month for 1-2 sitting books, and I'm fully on board for that.

Full Speed to a Crash Landing had me hooked from the dedication and epigraph pages, and even though I KNEW what was going to happen (Ada told us over and over again) I still had a blast getting there. Do not want to wait for How to Steal a Galaxy, but at least December isn't too far away.

Messy queer women who just kind of exist in their messiness are apparently my jam this year.

I started this and was immediately put off by how detached the style was, but decided to hang in there, and I'm glad I did. Ended up reading the whole thing in pretty much one sitting. Even though it's almost 300 pages of nothing really happening, I was thoroughly engaged and couldn't wait to find out what WASN'T going to happen next.

This is my ideal kind of beach read, up there with Marcy Dermansky and Anna Dorn.

Once again, I've run face-first into the perils of being widely read in a specific genre. This didn't really have anything new to add that I haven't read or watched before, but I still read it all in mostly one sitting when it was too warm to read anything that required too much thought. I look forward to watching the inevitable movie with the group I play drinking games with every Saturday.

13y/o: This is 4¾.

Me: Saving the five for a few books from now?

13y/o: Yesssss. Actually, I think this one is 4½. I really love the family dynamics in this one. And I know I told you this while we were reading, but the conversation between Katherine and Diana in the kitchen? SOB.

Me: I. KNOW.

13y/o: And also, thinking about
Diana's son visiting the Market?
omg

Me: Do you think
he stayed? Since Diana wrote that letter in 1990, and no mention is made of him having been at the school?

13y/o: omg, maybe? And maybe we'll get THAT as a book or short story one day?

Me: I hope so.

13y/o: I'm glad you're reading Juice Like Wounds to me now, bc I haven't read it and I always felt like Mockery had such a huge presence without ever having appeared on page.

My Darling Dreadful Thing

Johanna van Veen

DID NOT FINISH: 8%

Just was not into this at all. Possibly bc it's so hot out and I couldn't focus.

The best part of this one was Faith #1, which really surprised me bc I don't even fuckin LIKE Faith, so now I guess I gotta read another godsdamned thing.

Was v excited by the new artist for the first issue, then two issues where I again didn’t care for the art, and then I liked the last issue again. Kind of felt like not a whole lot happened in this one.
