I don’t usually like sad books. But this one… WOW!! I’ve never finished a book in tears yet wanting to read it again. Yarros has beautifully and tastefully covered loss, illness and heartbreak without being cliche as can so often happen in books like this.

The characters make you fall in love with them! Ella, the strong, determined single mother who would stop at nothing to protect her kids. Beckett, the former special ops agent who drops everything to care for the sister of his best friend who was KIA. Maisie and Colt, the twins who share a bond like no other, that despite everything life has thrown at them remain positive and bring joy to those around them.

An awful lot happens in this book (I won’t say too much so as to not spoil anything) but none of it feels rushed. You can really tell that Yarros has done her research when planning and writing this book.

And yes before you ask, there are sex scenes. They’re not as spicy as you’d usually expect from Yarros, however they perfectly fit the narrative and show the complex emotions that the characters are feeling at the time.

It does need pointing out that this book does cover childhood cancer, death of a child as well as war, all of which could be triggering for some readers.

Maybe that’s not the only question we should be asking, my grandfather said. Maybe we should also think about whether we’d really want it to be different. We could think about whether she actually did us a favor in her own way…”

When a young girl turns up at  Hannah’s door with a note from her husband that reads “protect her” she doesn’t quite understand just how much her life is about to be turned upside down. All she knows is that the “her” that he is referring to is her stepdaughter, Bailey.

In ‘The Last Thing He Told Me’, Laura Dave takes us on a journey alongside Hannah and Bailey in discovering the truth about who their husband and father really is. There’s mystery, there’s suspense and there’s raw emotion inside. It’s a book about learning to trust and trying to find out who you really are.

I love how the chapters are short enough to make it a book that’s really easy to pick up and put down. I also love the way that flashbacks to the past are used to help uncover different pieces of information. I cannot recommend this book highly enough!

I’ll leave you with this, my favourite quote from the whole book: “We forget all sorts of things that no one helps us remember,”

I absolutely loved this book!! The ending of priest made me want to know how Tyler and Poppy were going to adjust to life after he leaves the priesthood.

This book does that so perfectly. Showing how difficult it can be when both partners are in a season in which they need different things from each other and how they deal with guilt in their own different ways.

in Midnight Mass, Simone delicately tackles the topic of miscarriage and the effect that it can have on both parents as well as their relationship as a whole. She also shows how even in the darkest times, such as after the death of Millie, healing can be found.
