I had been putting this off for a few years. I don’t know why. I’m kind of kicking myself for it. I may have given this 5 stars if I read it years ago.
I ended up flying through this. Not wanting to put it down. After splitting this book into sections for each day I would get to the end of a section and want to carry on reading. It’s why I managed to finish this in 3 days.
The world itself was more complex than I expected. As the book goes on more is explained and I could figure things out. I imagine I will learn more in book two.
The romance isn’t a main focus, which I was glad about. But it felt not insta love but kinda. If that makes sense. Enemy to lover in a way. But maybe because I like Warden it didn’t bother me too much.
Paige is definitely a ‘chosen one’ trope. But that doesn’t bother me here. She comes across pretty likable so far. I’m not sure if that will stay being the case or not.
The story itself may not be the most unique story I’ve ever read but I did love it. I was captivated pretty much straight away. I’m left wanting to pick up book two ASAP. The narrator for the audiobook definitely made a difference I feel. It was just easy to lose myself into the book.

I was a little nervous about this. Just because The Flatshare didn’t fully live up to the expectations I put on the book. However I loved this. Managing to get through this in one day.
The audio narrators were perfect. They really brought the characters to life. Such a easy listen. I wasn’t wanting to put it down.
Grandma Eileen is such a cool gran. Especially with how helpful she is and wanting to improve the place. Caring about people.
The story itself was on the simple side. A lighter read. Although there is grief from a past death still effecting the characters. But I think it was handled well. The characters coming to terms and beginning to put themselves together again.
This wasn’t as heavy on the relationships for one of the characters as I had hope. I didn’t think it harmed the story. I preferred this to an insta love. Although it could have had a little more build.
Cheating trope usually annoys me. I understand why Beth O’Leary did it here. But I would have preferred something else.
This was a sweet, wholesome and endearing book. With two people in two different generations learning something from the other generation. Coming to terms with grief and moving on with their lives.
I definitely want to read more by Beth O’Leary.

When I read this (November 2020) this reminded me of two other books I had read that year.
But I still really enjoyed this. Fast paced with enough action to keep me gripped the whole time.
In the notes in my phone I .add two guesses. One at 20% and one at 26%. Both I felt were probably the most predictable options. Thankfully I was wrong with both. I didn’t want to guess it so early on. However throughout I kept flipping between more than those two guesses.
Something I felt Allie did great was making me question everyone. I found I couldn’t trust anyone. Even after the reveal I felt the epilogue may change the story again. (I won’t say if it did or not). I also felt Allie gave hints and clues at the points where it caused me to flip my opinion again.
I enjoyed the two timelines. One being present day and the other being 10 years before. Giving you slices of the days leading up to the incident. Making me question people more. Especially since it was all told from Milla POV.
The suspense throughout was great. The atmosphere especially towards the end fitted perfectly. Definitely a dark cold setting. Even if a little unrealistic at times. But I could look past that and just enjoy the book.
I wasn’t expecting the added element of romance. I can’t say I minded it as it wasn’t push ahead of the actual mystery. It was just a side story that actually added another layer in my opinion.
This being a debut and getting the same rating as a more seasoned published author while having similar stories impressed me. Getting me more excited and hyped for a future release. I will definitely be keeping an eye out on a future book.
