okay what the fuck like actually

i would actually have a heart attack if i was ever in a relationship like this or knew anybody who was like this.

the plot was fine it was interesting and i was very engaged but omg the characters BYE

rika first of all is a dumb ass name. she’s stupid as shit and whiny. every time michael fucks with her she thinks she’s being powerful when she gives in but he’s literally just manipulating her and she’s falling into his trap??? like literally playing right into his hands. she’s weak and naive. i don’t understand why she’s so drawn to michael at. all. and like once everything comes out she just lets michael fuck her a few times and then she’s over it????????????????? no groveling no real apology just dick and done.

michael is a disgusting human being. he spends his entire life completely ignoring rika but ‘silently wanting her’ and then complains about not being able to have her. like????????? you literally created your own prison wtf. typical man. he is secretly planning to ruin rika’s life for 3 years + the first half of this book and STILL FUCKS HER. disgusting. he’s supposedly in love with her but damn near let his friends rape her in front of him. what. the. fuck.

alex was useless like she advanced no plot at all. trevor and damon were just plain weird. will was dumb as a box of rocks.

i honestly probably liked kai the most which is not saying much at all. he was fucked up in the head but actually showed remorse for his actions. plus the steam room scene was hot.

do not read this book unless you hate yourself

i feel like it’s almost not fair for me to review this book right now. i just happened to read this immediately after Every Summer After (which is now one of my favorite books ever) bc i’m broke and this is on KU. they’re definitely very different, but with the same kind of premise (second chance love, alleged unrequited life-long family-friend crushes, then and now chapters, east coast summer house on the water, etc. etc.) it almost had no chance through no fault of its own.

BUT this was a very sweet book. i loved the characters and their connection. the last minute hail mary conflict felt a little trivial to me but the ending was very satisfying. not as good as every summer after but still a 5 star read for me

i liked this a lot. it definitely read like a fanfic but it honestly worked with the plot. wasn’t a huge fan of the fmc bc she was so self deprecating and only saw herself as valuable once tom told her she was. but i loooooved tom holy

this was sweet but forgettable. i loved the premise bc i box but it just didn’t do much for me. ethan so sexy i wanna touch him so bad

this single-handedly brought me out of the reading rut i got myself into with the past couple of books i read. i read this almost completely in one sitting. this was such a cute freakin story. hazel was almost a little too over the top quirky at times but it was really consistent throughout the book instead of just being mentioned once to show that she’s Not Like Other Girls. like the authors definitely supported her uniqueness throughout the book. i also liked the dual pov a lot more than i thought i would. josh was so sweet omg

i forgive christina lauren for unhoneymooners now.

i would like to make it clear that i only read this bc i’m broke and this is on KU.

now that we’ve gotten that out of the way, this book was too goddamn long for what actually happened in it. like it was dragging the whole damn time. mascen is a stupid fucking way to spell mason and he was not attractive to me at all. i was rooting for cole the whole time. the fmc was really annoying too. dialogue was dumb as shit at points. just overall not a good book for me. might still read the next one though smh

ME AND WHO???

this was alright but forgettable. tessa bailey has written MUCH better since this. loved the female dominant power dynamic but wish she dove into that a little more.

Lynn Painter is one of my top 5 favorite authors, but she seriously missed the mark on this one. I genuinely don’t know what happened. 2.5 stars rounded down.

Synopsis
Izzy Shay is late for her very first day of work at her new job in HR at Ellis Industries, her dream company. The line at Starbucks is huge, so she decides to steal a stranger’s drink off the counter to make it to work on time. Because Izzy is such a quirky, clumsy, clumsy girl, she runs straight into a man, spilling her scalding hot drink all over him. She bumbles and fumbles around with napkins and straight up gropes his chest because she is so flustered and clumsy, clumsy. He becomes so enraptured with this quirky, clumsy, clumsy girl, that he valiantly does not care about his clothes or (likely) 1st degree burns and begs for her number instead. As she leaves, he calls her “Amy,” the name of the stranger from who Izzy stole a drink. And because Izzy is such a quirky, clumsy, clumsy girl, she does not correct him and goes about her day.
Later, at the gym in her office building, she ends up on the elevator with none other than the man from Starbucks, whom she has named “Mr. Chest.” In order to talk to him longer, she suddenly halts the elevator, which is of course quirky and clumsy inside of her head, but Mr. Chest finds it oh so sexy. When they finally exit the elevator, he yet again refers to her as Amy, and she yet again does not correct him.
Her direct supervisor at Ellis wants to introduce her to the Assistant Vice President of the company. The AVP is, of course, none other than Mr. Chest, though his real name is Blake Phillips. The truth quickly, and awkwardly, comes out and Blake/Chest is turned off of Izzy/Amy because he recently ended his engagement with a woman who was a liar and also the devil. This engagement is seldom brought up again throughout the story and serves no real purpose whatsoever.
Izzy decides to text Blake later that night to explain that she is just a quirky, clumsy, clumsy girl who meant no real harm by her lie and it's Perfectly Fine if he wants to fire her. Against his personal ethics, he replies to the quirky, quirky girl, despite the fact that she is his employee to tell her, valiantly, that he will not fire her.
Izzy gets stranded on the side of the road in what is portrayed as a Category 5 hurricane and needs Blake to save her because she is walking on the side of the highway. She refuses his help because she is quirky and clumsy, but he valiantly does not care. He and his nice car are so rich, rich, rich and she is so poor, poor, poor and quirky and clumsy and drenched to the bone. He takes her to her poor, poor, poor apartment and stays there to play a game with her and her friends, even though she is his employee, and They Cannot Be Friends. At the end of the night, they decide that maybe they can be friends despite their romantic and sexual feelings toward one another. This is, of course, not true and they spend the rest of the book trying not to admit that they like each other.

The Bad
- I’m sure my feelings toward the characters are clear in my synopsis. There was no real depth to either of them. I found this to be true of the last book I read of Lynn Painter’s, as well.
- I’m not sure exactly what happened with the editors on this book, but the typos and inconsistent formatting made this nearly impossible to read. This could also be due to the fact that I read this on my Kindle. Regardless, I was so focused on the errors that I found it hard to actually pay attention to the story.
- The steamy scenes were mostly fade-to-black, which I am not a fan of.
- The word (if you could even call it that) “Gawwwwd” was so incredibly overused. Actually, only using it once would be too much. But she used it so incredibly much, in BOTH POVs, that I was physically cringing every time I read it. I had real secondhand embarrassment. It was bad.
- The ending was ATROCIOUS. I didn’t even realize that it had ended. There were so many loose ends and it genuinely hurts my brain to think about it.

The Good
- I could genuinely feel the chemistry between the characters. Like I truly believed that they were destined for each other.
- Lynn Painter sure knows how to write ooey-gooey feelings. As much as I hated this book, I found myself smiling at a few parts.

TLDR
Don’t waste your time.

this... was a book. in fact i feel like i’ve read this book 5 times over. it’s essentially the same thing as her first book and all three novellas. the same. fucking. thing.

the weird marie curie obsession was so fucking annoying. no one cares that much about anything. they were just very oddly placed and weren’t related to the story really.

how are these people apparently soooo smart but so damn stupid. you’re telling me this woman has a phd in neuroscience but can’t conjure up the idea to ASK this dude why he treats her poorly. or is so busy interrupting him over and over and over again that she can’t hear him say he’s attracted to her. and HE is an engineer at nasa but is flabbergasted when his frankly bizarre actions toward someone he’s supposedly sexually attracted to are misconstrued. i think it was supposed to build angst but it was just downright frustrating and cringey. FUCKING. STUPIDDDDD

i’m so tired of the minuscule, child-like fmc and tall with a 2 liter coke bottle sized dick mmc trope. if you can even call it a trope. it’s just so unrealistic and borderline pedophilic.

the johnson space center is houston ADJACENT not in houston proper. so you can’t see the houston skyline from that area. that pissed me off while reading.

and now the end……. so fucking ridiculous. just plain stupid. i don’t even want to talk about it.

ALSO if i’m driving and someone EVER took off their shoes and put their bare feet on my dash, i don’t care how obsessed with them i am, i will be ramming that side of my car into the next available tree or building.
