While this book started out pretty well and was shaping up to be a quick and cute rom com, I didn’t expect this chicken storyline to take over so heavily. Like honestly this could’ve been an okay story and had enough going on without the chicken? There were tons of sidebars to siblings / jobs / neighbors / trauma / parents / pets / etc.
Trixie was also written as a “super quirky” character, which doesn’t always work for me - especially with her “non-swearing” and punny jokes. This drove me bonkers and made the romance side of things cringey for me. The characters themselves were cute, but there was a focus on soooo many side characters (definitely gearing up for another book in this series), and the main characters remained underdeveloped. Their trauma storylines were really choppy and plugged into the story when the timing needed it, but it wasn’t super coherent. That being said, while this wasn’t for me, it was definitely an easy and quick read and if you’re into chickens and puns, this will be your jam.

Jasmine Zumideh wants nothing more than to get into NYU for journalism. To give her an extra leg up, she decides to run for Senior Class President. The only problem is the early admission application is due before the election results are in... so it should be fine if she just says she's President on her application, right? Except that the election isn't as breezy as she thought, as the Iran Hostage Crisis begins and her opponent starts saying things like "bomb Iran", while Jasmine, as an Iranian-American, tries to erase her Iranian identity and distance herself from the Crisis. Jasmine's struggle with her identity while her brother is so set in his, and the historical information woven into this 1979 storyline really set this book apart as a YA novel. It's incredibly unique and informative, and is great for readers of all ages. I can see this being a really wonderful pick for a high school English class or book club, because the perspective is great and it would lead to really wonderful discussion. Just note it is definitely YA and all the teenage girl friend drama and dumb decision-making are also included - lol!

After lovvving Man Enough, I immediately went and requested Boys Will Be Human, knowing I’d absolutely need this book for my family. My boys are 9 and 5, and while this book is geared for boys 11+, I loved learning more concepts and language I can start using now before I have my oldest listen to this book when it’s more age appropriate. I am totally using this french fry analogy to describe consent - it was so good! I just loved this book. It’s everything I want my sons to hear and know. The whole time I was listening to this, I was also just thinking about how valuable this could be for single mothers, too, who may not have a solid male role model to connect with on some of these topics.
Anyway,
If you have literally any men in your life —> read Man Enough.
If you have sons or nephews or students in your life —> read Man Enough and Boys Will Be Human.
