I picked this up because it focused on divers and I'd never read a novel on diving - a sport I actually follow, know the rules and enjoy (yes, Tom Daley may have a part in my interest)!
It was nice reading parts that explained the sport Joe competitions when I myself already know how it works. I could picture the dives and know that the Chinese were the ones to look out for!!
It's like I was already part of their little universe that other readers may be discovering for the first time.
Even though it's a little book without too many surprises, most things are expected and maybe a little cheesy at times, but sometimes that is needed!
I read it to calm myself down after an intense book and it did the job perfectly well.
ALSO, after saying that things weren't unexpected, I must tell you about one surprise I got tears over: reading a character basically describing themself as a biromantic asexual.

This is the one thing that gets me every single time I read it: a group of friends that consider each other their home, their family. I JUST CAN’T DEAL WITH IT. It affects me so much I automatically love them.
And I really did love them. The characters were all pretty great. Ollie’s introverted personality was so relatable, Tai was so sweet, and even the other characters (+ an asexual character talking about asexuality YES) were great although I would have loved to learn more about them!
I would have loved to learn more about so many things actually. This story really does concentrate on the relationship between Tai and Ollie, as well as their family I suppose. But I was SO interested in them that I wanted to know more about their surroundings: I need to have more Jamie/Ollie interactions! How do these surf comps work? What about the other competitors we see more than once?

update 07 May 2017 : reread before the next book because I had forgotten absolutely everything about it! I still don't feel like that much happened to the main characters of this new series, but still so lovely to see the faces and places I love back in my lives.
Basically, this first book is an introduction at what is to come, and I can't wait to actually really get into it with the next book that is waiting for me right now.

Je ne pensais pas qu'on reverrai autant des personnages qu'on connaissait déjà et ça m'a ravie de les revoir ! J'attends avec impatience de revoir les autres.
Bien que j'ai aimé les personnages d'Apollon et Meg, j'étais quand même beaucoup plus entraînée par les lieux qu'on revisite, les personnages qu'on revoit, le monde dans lequel on re-rentre. Mais je pense que je serai plus impliquée par l'histoire dans les prochains livres.

4.5/5 - As always with TJ Klune's books, I'm adding this to my favourites.
It's about the wizard-to-the-king's Apprentice who is desperately in love with the gorgeous Knight who just so happens to be the Prince's boyfriend. When the Prince gets kidnapped by a Dragon, the apprentice, along with a giant, his best friend and gay hornless unicorn Gary, AND OF COURSE the Knight, all go on a mission to rescue him.
NO, it is not a kid's book.
YES. IT IS JUST AS GREAT AS IT SOUNDS.
It was SO funny. Like, laughing at every page kind of funny.
Half way through I realised most of the jokes were quite sexual and wondered how my not-very-sexual mind could find all this so funny? But then I remembered the author is also ace and clearly that doesn't mean you can't tell those kind of jokes, or laugh at them - quite on the ontrary apparently.
But it's not only a funny story. It's also full of heart.
I care so much about these characters who may seem typical-one sided at first, but ... oh no they are not.
Klune has a way of writing stories that take time to develop into something very powerful, and meaningful, hitting us with strong emotions just as we thought this was a fun ride.
This story has struck my heart with lightning and learning that it is going to be a trilogy made my week. My month even. I can't wait to read the others.

I mean, this isn't a five star for me because my favourite character is absent for most of the book... But we get introduced to quite a few new characters, including Nico (NICOOOOOO<3), and also the first glimpse of Rachel Elizabeth Dare (YES I ACTUALLY REALLY LIKE HER TOO).
As always, fun, action-packed adventure with characters I love so so much I want to squeeze them most of the time.
FR : Oh mes bébés. Je les aime tellement.
Ce n'est pas un 5étoiles pour moi parce que mon personnage préféré s'absente pour la plupart du bouquin...
Mais on nous introduit à plusieurs nouveaux personnages dont Nico et Rachel (que j'aime énormément par la suite).
Comme toujours, c'est une livre très drôle, rempli d'action et de personnages que j'adore par dessus tout.
