I really liked this book. It wasn't at all what I expected. However, I was mildly disappointed in the ending. I hate it when books attempt a quick wrap up.
**Disclaimer: I received this book as an ARC from NetGalley. This is my honest review...I NEVER lie about books.**
At first, I was worried. The prose is very blunt and can be a little graphic. But once I got past my own awkwardness, this book turned out to be pretty great. It was fun, quippy, and an easy read. I loved Ellie. She was just the right amount of neurotic. I identified with her in certain ways and laughed at her mishaps. This book was definitely entertaining. I liken it to a more grown up version of Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret. I liked it quite a bit.

This book was a little bit of a slower read than my more recent ones, but not because it lacked interest. Any time I'm dealing with historical fiction from the British monarchy, I find that it takes a little more work. Darn those people for naming all of their kids with the same names! Once I got rolling, keeping track of the characters wasn't too bad and I really loved the story. It reads very well. In fact, it reminds me a lot of Philippa Gregory's style (who I love by the way). It ends in a very difficult spot for me as a reader. It's a good place to stop in terms of wrapping up one part of the story, but it just ramps me back up wanting more. It's a very good setup if she wishes to do a second book. If not...well, then I need to learn more about this part of history because now I'm curious.

This book hooked me really quickly. In fact, before I realized it I was already 150 pages in. The writing is a little rough around the edges in some places, but very good. It fits with the tone of the book and the setting. The ending kept me guessing and left my heart in my throat.

Hilariously funny. If you've ever wanted to feel better about a craft project that didn't turn out the way you envisioned, this is the book for you. Pictures of the flops, along with quips and comments that had me laughing out loud from cover to cover. Seriously. If you have a coffee table, this book needs to be on it. I will start by saying that I am a big John Green fan. Outside of his novels, I really just love how smart and entertaining this man is. If you haven't seen his works on YouTube (Vlogbrothers w/ his brother Hank, CrashCourse, and so many others) then you need to go search it out. I was also a very big fan of the first novel of his that I read, The Fault in Our Stars.
I had been looking forward to reading Looking for Alaska for several years. It didn't quite live up to the hype I had built up for it, but it is still a very good book. After all, it deserves credit for getting me out of my reading slump and helping me to FINALLY finish my first book of 2015. It wasn't the powerhouse that I found with The Fault in Our Stars, but I almost feel guilty comparing the two against one another. Obviously, some books shoot to fame and others don't quite make it that far...even with the same author. If I compare Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban against, say Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, I will always be more wowed by Azkaban. It doesn't make me love J.K. Rowling any less. And so...just because I'm not giving Looking for Alaska five stars doesn't make me love John Green any less. I still have his other novels on my TBR. I'm still very much excited to read them.
Looking for Alaska? Worth reading. Just do it a favor...don't compare it to it's younger (but more popular) sister...

I started off thinking I wasn't going to make it through this one. The writing is a little...well...juvenile. But then I had to remind myself that it IS YA fiction, so I should probably cut it some slack. Once I relaxed about that, this thing took off. I read the entire book in a single sitting. It was actually quite good. It held my attention really well, I was rooting for characters and hoping things would turn out the way I wanted to, I was hoping other characters would get their crap together. It kept me involved. It won't go up to the top shelf with my favorite of favorites, but The Duff is a good book that's worth the read -- especially since you won't have to invest a ton of time or energy in reading it. It's a good afternoon book -- probably a great beach read as well. This might also be a good one to grab if you're doing a read-a-thon.
I like Amy Poehler. I find her very funny, but also with the ability to be real and human. I liked her book for the most part. There were a couple of sections where I felt she was being slightly less than genuine and maybe a little preachy or too (for lack of a better term) holier than thou. These spots wrecked the flow of the book for me and dropped it a star. Overall though, a very decent and straightforward read from a very talented lady.
