Just alright! I think it would be a lot cooler if it was fleshed out into a longer story but that’s my opinion on most short books. Overall it was fine but the writing style was pretty corny

I  enjoyed the story enough but a big hang up is that I didn’t really care or connect with the MC very much. While I felt sorry for her, it seemed as though there wasn’t much to her and everything happened *to* her - like she wasn’t very important to the overall story. I wish she was given just a bit more of a personality or something

I went into this knowing it’s not my preferred genre so I’m not surprised to say I found it to be ~just okay~. The tone was different than I’m used to SGJ using so I found that refreshing and enjoyed the past to present storytelling. Overall it was fine. Just not for me

Overall the book was fine but nothing as crazy or interesting as I thought it was going to be. I had a hard time caring about any of the characters and the pacing of the book felt SO slow. It definitely didn’t need to be as long as it was. I kept waiting for something super crazy to happen but nothing really came? I don’t regret reading it but man it did feel like it took me 2/3 of the book to actually want to continue reading

The MC is extremely annoying (as are most of Kingfisher’s characters are unfortunately). Maybe it’s her writing style, but I just find it overly familiar while also being not at all relatable in how people actually talk?

I also read The Hollow Places first which now feels extremely similar in set up, MC, and style as this one - so much so that I almost immediately DNF’ed. However I’m glad I didn’t bc I found this story to be a bit more unsettling since it’s ?? Slightly more real in mind since it’s very ~Appalachian folk horror~.

Like all of the books I’ve read by this author, the ending fell a bit flat and tapered off, but overall I enjoyed the horror elements in this. There were  some genuinely creepy parts that left me feeling unsettled. I’m coming to realize that I’m not a fan of this authors writing style but the plots themselves tend to be interesting.
