That last Gert and Victor panel makes my heart sing.
Shaun David Hutchinson writes contemporary mixed with sci-fi, which sounds like it can’t co-exist and yet it does. I am a fan because he creates characters that are ordinarily extraordinary. They’re unforgettable.
Elena Mendoza, interesting not only because she was a virginal birth, not only because she may have powers, but because sassy, real, and easy to relate to. Because Shaun David Hutchinson creates characters that live in our heads forever. Every character, even the secondary and side characters. Everyone feels real in this story.
As all of Shaun’s stories, The Apocalypse of Elena Mendoza is about finding yourself. Not to get biblical but there’s a lot of exploration of free will and figuring out who you are (not who you’re supposed to be). Shaun likes to put characters in these really tough situations (save the cheerleader, save the world - ok, not really but intimate objects [which might be the funniest part of the story] keep telling Elena to heal people or the world will end) and then you’re really cheering for them to persevere. Whatever that might mean for them…

I think I am in the minority here when I say I REALLY love Jamie.
As a non-Sherlockian, I was taken by storm when Brittany Cavallaro created two characters we couldn't resist loving. See why you need to read The Last of August (and A Study in Charlotte, the first in the series!).
Oh my gosh what is NOT up with these two in this story?! Brittany added in the whole Holmes clan so you know there's bound to be drama. Jamie is still pining for Charlotte and Charlotte still has her hands in stuff she shouldn't. So, you know, the usual.
All I knew about the Moriartys before this book was that they were no bueno. So when we learned of Charlotte and August's past in the previous book, I was all SAY WHAT! I knew there were going to be repercussions. Not sure Charlotte (and Jamie) deserved what happens, though!
I love that Brittany took them away from school. Changing the setting brought even more depth to the two of them and added the opportunity to bring in new characters. So we saw people we might not have seen if they stayed in the school.
There are easter eggs that only Sherlock fans will get but they don't detract from the story at all. The characters are what make this book. Really. Is it too much to hope for a big reunion between the families in the next book? Yeah, probably LOL.
