Too. many. arguments.
I was sooo tired of Cel and Kyle fighting. I felt like a kid watching their parents go at it. Like, can y'all stop? I understand these fights progressed the story in a way, but it just dragged on and on.
There's a nice backdrop on mental health issues and some freaky, creepy stuff going on. The mystery aspect was the most compelling part of this story, but I felt like so much buildup made the climax a bit weak.
Abi had a lot of focus in this story, but I would've liked more insight on Cel. I only saw her being grouchy. She always lashed out and assumed people thought she was "crazy." From a story-writing pov, if there was a flashback or an experience that made her feel this way, I would feel more sympathetic toward her. We see a glimpse of the mental breakdown she had that made her lose her last job. If there were some whispers of, "she just went crazy!" maybe Cel's kneejerk reaction would feel more impactful. Idk.
Still, I like how this story highlights how mental health issues were handled so trash back then. At least, now things are slowly progressing.

"Don't look down on me just because I'm stuck to your feet!"
A fun mystery with some dark elements thrown in. Nothing too scary but some shadows get devoured.
I enjoyed cynical, serious "can't laugh at cat videos and gotta wear black clothes every day because she's so beyond these plebians" Suee, their detective trio, and the limited color palette of black, red, cream, white, and murky violet. Haeun and Hyunwoo are characters I want to see more of. The queen bee bully is stereotypical and flat, but it's lampshaded.
This book touches subtly on the complicity of watching bullying, how emotionally-vulnerable kids are susceptible to being tricked and used, and how parents never really notice what's going on.
Overall, I'm interested in reading a sequel, and I hope to see Suee become less callous.
Aww, an excellent story with kaiju (huge Japanese monsters I believe ) and an adorable, realistic main character. Also, I was happy to see a positive, drama-free portrayal of a black family and supportive marriage.
I'm an adult, but I teared up when Zoe broke down after seeing how much her parents loved each other, wishing she had a friend that cared about her like that. When I tell you, I had to fight off those ugly tears with a bat.
Overall, I recommend this story to anyone. It's relatable to anyone's that's been hurt by someone or felt lonely. The artwork's cute too. Now, the "make friends or else" theme is very much present without acknowledging it's okay to be alone sometimes too. But I get it because Zoe was alone because she was too afraid to open herself back up to people and not entirely because she just wanted too
