At first it was hard for me to get into this book but once I did WOW. Poetic prose with two characters that display such a desperate need for each other that I can only sit and dream of timelines where they are together, neighbors, sipping tea 🥲

Loved this!!! A second banger from Zhao. I read their middle grade book earlier this summer and also loved it. The story gripped me throughout and the enemies to lovers trope is on full display here. And wonderfully so. And the poly representation?? Wow.
I will say that the tone and narrator voice in the opening chapter really turned me away but luckily after that it flows much better. In the first chapter, the sentences felt choppy and everything was really heavy handed but then the actual main character starts up and her voice is much more enjoyable.
Wonderful book! Cant wait for the next one

A surprisingly great read! At first, it took time to get used to the narrator voice (still not buying that a teacher would not curse at all LOL) but the story is captivating. I appreciate all of the science woven throughout that sparked all the nerdy excitement in me.

Loved this!! What a fun read. Good on the writing to make me actually laugh aloud at points. Jokes land and work well to keep the action light. Ready for the sequel and now more excited to finally read their other book, Iron Widow

I enjoyed the sense of foreboding but found the vignettes too disconnected and confusing. There’s potential here with the dystopia presented but the chapters seem to meander around without much stakes it feels at times. As the book went on, stakes felt they went down?? There are a lot of details I feel are purposeful left vague but this hurts my ability to follow characters. One character I thought was dead came up in the next chapter and so then I was like are we in the past? I couldn’t keep track of what was happening a lot of the time.

What an incredible follow up to Black Sun!! I’m hooked as ever and ready for the next one. The characters continue to be vibrant and feel so alive thanks to Roanhorse’s incredibly beautiful writing.
I’m curious to see how she writes a war novel. I haven’t read many books with epic battle scenes that I can remember. Those I do were not really engaging for me BUT I trust Roanhorse to do a stellar job. May Serapio and Xiala reunite 😩😩😩
Eagerly awaiting more!!!

I’m not typically one to pick up YA. We are reading this in my 9th grade class. The ending was worthwhile but left me with some unanswered questions. The parts that were wrapped up were done in a way that doesn’t suggest a sequel so these unanswered questions and plot lines seem more of a bummer. Overall easy to read and a refreshing mystery. The author left clues throughout which felt good to find as the reader.
