cunningempress's Reviews (526)

If you liked The Folk of the Air trilogy you'd probably really like this one too.

Magical, yet eerie and the ending combined with PMS almost made me cry in public.

I was in a bit of reading slump, it never takes me 2 weeks to finish a book but I'm glad I kept reading this. I didn't even feel like this got boring, I was always glad to come back to it, I just didn't feel like picking up a book very often.

This is the second book by Margaret Rogerson that I really love so I might be buying some of her books in the future.

Is it even possible to recover from this? This book hurt me and I need to read it again (but not right now, I need time).

This book was so beautiful in so many ways. It's pretty much the perfect book, or at least the kind of that I've been dreaming about.

I would suggest this as an audiobook. I'm not sure I would've had the strength to read all of it myself but listening to someone else tell the story was so exciting and I couldn't stop listening.

This is going to be a rant review without spoilers because I despise this book.

I don't usually like this sort of genre where underage kids are looking into murders and crimes, because it often ends up with them being in the sort of problems that are really serious and they really should go talk to the police but for whatever - usually very poor - reasons they decide against it and then end up in life threatening situations.
This series was an exception, though. Because Pip actually has a relationship with her parents and she talks to them and her parents know that she's investigating serious crimes and going around town asking questions. That's why I like this series, because in a way it's realistic.

Starting this book I also liked this because it's darker than the previous books, Pip deals with PTSD and it all makes sense if you look at the events of the past books. She's been through a lot and it shows.

BUT THEN
The middle of the book this turns into something totally different and IT KEEPS GOING FOR THE REST OF THE BOOK. IS THIS EVEN THE SAME BOOK ANYMORE? WHAT THE FUCK?

I was blindsided, I feel tricked and lied to and I don't like it. The last half of this book was a fucking mess and hated reading it and by the end I just wanted to be over with this and take it back to the library so I never have to look at it again.

I don't even know how many stars I should give this because at first I was thinking 4, but after the plot twist... I'm debating between 3 and 2...

It was good, I'm not impressed.

YA and thriller don't seem like a combination that would work. At least I'm skeptical about how scary a book can actually be if it's YA but parts of this book had me questioning if I should keep reading after dark so I think that worked out.

This reminded me a lot about [b:One of Us Is Lying|58679358|One of Us Is Lying (One of Us is Lying, #1)|Karen M. Somehow I got the sense that this book has the potential to be MORE and 300 pages just wasn't enough to fully write out the whole story.

All in all, it was an enjoyable and quick read.

This was slower paced than I anticipated. It only picked up speed toward the ending.

I don't know what to say about this book. It's a really good fantasy book, I understand why so many people love it. But I might be a little more interested in the sequel.

The ending had so many heartbreaking moments.

The enemies to lovers subplot wasn't as juicy as I expected. Maybe in the next book.

These characters are a mess, no wonder none of them have a love life.

Never let me add another YA mystery book to my TBR.

It's always teenagers doing the detective work, not talking to the cops and then getting into trouble.

I wouldn't recommend this to anyone but someone who really likes ya mystery. This book is just all my pet peeves put into one.

I really, really loved this! If you like to listen to audiobooks I definitely recommend listening to this one! And if you prefer a traditional book then you should read that because this is so, so interesting!

I just kept listening to this, I listened to it while I cooked, when I was going to bed and I even listened to this at the gym!

If the synopsis seems like something you'd enjoy, I promise you won't be disappointed!

However, this book does require a trigger warning for domestic and sexual abuse. If you're not comfortable with those topics then you should maybe skip this.

THAT ENDING IS EMOTIONAL DAMAGE!

These books are extremely slow paced because the mc (or author, idk) has a habit of going on long tangents about random subjects. While it does a lot to explain the magic system and world building it also doesn't really further the story. But this time I was prepared for that. And I actually find it pretty nice now.

I need 3-5 business days to recover from that cliffhanger. And I need the next book sooner rather than later.

Holy shit. I need to take a day just to get over that ending. Damn.

This was a great read! I had fun diving into this fantasy world, I love that the book has so much detail and great world-building, it was exactly what I expected from this after a year of waiting. The multiple different POVs give such an expansive view of the world and better understanding of it. I love that the book is this long, it really feels like you get to live through the characters.

And about the ending... truth to be told I was actually expecting something like that. I think it's been hinted at for a long time.

But holy shit I was not expecting to read a book this long in just 3 days!
