The amount of Disturbed songs that were explicitly mentioned in this book was too many.

When the Chekov’s Gun is a pink butt plug and matching pink kitty ears. Sigh. If there’s a heaven, I’m not going there.

If you read this book in elementary school and remembered it absolutely slapping, good news: this book is still ridiculous and awesome. It’s basically Michael Crichton for the children. We get some corporate conspiracies and surprise
eugenics and not so surprising child deaths
!

Do I have confidence that these children and parents are going to be ok reintegrating into society? No. ‘Specially not Pa. Who kinda seems like he might be inclined to start his own cult now. Ma and Pa are DEFINITELY getting divorced.

I kept thinking of how many loose threads there are - so many unanswered questions about what happens now. That would definitely have to be a book for adults.

Filing this under - THIS IS A BOOK FOR CHILDREN?!?!?

The Love of My Afterlife

There’s this strange trend of British rom coms published in the 2020s that seem like they’re trying to evoke Bridget Jones/Notting Hill/Four Weddings & A Funeral and feel (to me) like cringey time capsules - this book is just not working for me. Respectfully DNFing early.

Patiently waiting for Taevas’s story. TYSM.

Update December 2024:
Just finished Devotion’s Covenant. THE PLOT THICKENS.

Stinger

Mia Sheridan

I guess this is Mia Sheridan’s second book and to say her writing has improved over the years is an understatement. Could not get through this. It looks like the pacing is going to be VERY lopsided (for second chance romance we want the second chance to be at least on par with the first chance - not the last 15% right?).

The lawyer from NOT Las Vegas, NV in me could not handle her portrayal of the most uptight 1L at a conference in Vegas. Her plan is to graduate from law school in 2 years. First of all - HOW?!?! You’d be dead, girl. Second of all - WHY? It was also a choice (see: not a choice I liked) to make Stinger really unhappy and ashamed of the fact that he works in P0rn. Especially considering the niche he’s in is targeted to woman. I think Rosie Danan handled the uptight inexperienced princess/male pornstar with a heart of gold MUCH BETTER and with SO MUCH MORE HEAT in The Roommate. I’d recommend you read that book instead.

A Romantic Suspense / Tarzan retelling. If you can hang with an over-the-top and ridiculously serendipitous plot, this book is for you. If you’re one of those “that would have never happened in real life” readers, you’re probably gonna have a bad time.

Lucas
aka Jak
is basically Archer 2.0. Which is not a bad thing. We love a sweet cinnamon roll too soft for this world and his lady love who is just as soft and protective of his beautiful soul.

Reading Kyland actually got me to pick up Persuasion by Jane Austen, and this book is making me want to commit to finally reading The Count of Monte Cristo.

Kind of a lot of triggers? Pretty much what you’d expect based on the premise of this book. Still - read with care.

Come As You Are

Jess K. Hardy

I’m really supposed to believe this Montana man thinks the name Ashley is magical and exotic? We really described her voice as “smooth and smoky- like whiskey soaked cotton”? A booze soaked t shirt is the metaphor? Grumble grumble.
