Review:
This book was wonderful! It is book two in the series and I loved the book. T.M covers so many topics but with this cozy fantasy, you get this feeling of belonging within a community after feeling excluded your entire life. Book two, Dusted in Snowflakes, follows Kaida on her journey of opening a new business in her town and builds on that aspect. I absolutely loved going on this journey with Kaida and getting to know her more and see how she built her bakery. I also loved the new addition to the cozy smallburrow group.
T.M also focuses on the fact that Kaida is also neurodivergent and she bases this on her daughters and herself. While reading this book, as a neurodivergent myself, I could totally relate to Kaida, on how she always felt different and like she stood out, no matter what she did. This book is perfect way to make you feel like you belong and what better place to belong in other than a cozy community in Smallburrow:

"She tried not to think about the life she had left back there, the sadness that she felt with anyone but Eilaen. Though everyone had been nice to her, nobody had tried to understand her in the ways Eilaen always had. Nobody ever had, not until they had moved here and she'd gotten to know the townsfolk and had been wrapped in love by Ms. Kestrel and Jareth. She'd always been seen as weird, as different. She was always "too bouncy" or "too loud" or "too much" for everyone. Even her own parents struggled with her uniqueness, the tension only growing thicker once she began to show her affinity for baking magic."

"She decided not to risk it. Words could always be said, but could rarely be unsaid."

Long Review:
A Sorceress Comes to Call is a dark/gothic fantasy retelling of Goose Girl. We follow along with Cordelia and her unusual mother. She grows up with only her mom, in a house that doesn't have any doors between the rooms so that Cordelia cant keep any secrets from her mom. She doesnt allow her to go to school or have any friends. Another peculiar thing is: she forces Cordelia to do what she wants if Cordelia does not listen. The only relief Cordelia has is when her mother occasionally leaves and lets her stay home alone
"She gazed at the pages sometimes, and thought what it would like to write I hate my mother in a fierce scrawl across the pages.
She did not do it. Closing the door when she was home alone was as much rebellion as she dared. If she had written something so terrible, she would have been made obedient for weeks, perhaps a month. She did not think she could stand it for so long."
Then, something changes. Her mother comes back and says that they have to leave the house and go and convince a wealthy older man to marry her. Mind you, they leave after a suspicious death in the small town nearby their house AND this house is the place of the only human friend Cordelia has. Her other friend is Falada, her mother's beautiful white horse.
In the new house, the Squire (wealthy older man) and his unwed sister, Hester welcome Cordelia and her mother. However, Hester starts to get suspicious of Cordelia's mother and the plot takes it from there. This book is filled with murder, scary but friendly spirits, a betraying familiar and an ending that is satisfying for this gothic fantasy book.

Review:
The Briar Book of the Dead is a Gothic Historical Fantasy set in a world that is filled with witches, ghosts and magic. We follow Ellie Briar, who is the first in her family to be born without any magic. This is problematic for her as her family run the town she lives in, known as Silverton. She would need the magic to manage everything in the village. Despite the lack of magic, she is trained by her great aunt to be a steward to her cousin, a powerful witch, Audra.
I honestly LOVED the pace of The Briar Book of the Dead and the way the plot thickens and continues to unravel different mysteries. I loved seeing Ellie develop as a character and continue to grow. I quite enjoyed that this book includes some history of witches and how they do their best to avoid being burned in Silverton.
Ellie is a unique character as she does not have magic, but one day, she hits her head and she can see & hear the dead all of a sudden. She is unique in this and is given a different responsibility than she expected and as she says in the book:
We also learn that Ellie's cousins: Audra, Eira and Nia are all witches & powerful in their own way. We learn how they treat Ellie and how it shapes her to be who she is. I think one of the important themes of the book is how family, those who you share bloods with, can exclude you and hurt you in ways others cant. This is seen throughout the story and it is an important part of the plot:
Overall, the whole book is filled with background stories and information that helps us understand the characters, the world & the background stories of witches in this world. I quite enjoyed getting to know more about the characters and witches in general in Silverton.
I didnt know that this book is based in the same universe as two other books by the author and will definitely be reading those too.

"I've very good at seeing the bigger picture and all its working pars. A perfect steward as long as no magic is required."This is such a unique spin to magic & witches for me and I quite enjoyed reading it and seeing it grow. Learning that Ellie can speak to the dead and how she uses this newfound connection to learn more about what is happening around her.

"There's a moment when I consider telling them as they prepare to depart. Look! I'm different now. I'm just as strange as you! I belong. As if that could wash away years of mockery, of difference, of otherness."
