Long Review:
A Sorceress Comes to Call is a dark/gothic fantasy retelling of Goose Girl. We follow along with Cordelia and her unusual mother. She grows up with only her mom, in a house that doesn't have any doors between the rooms so that Cordelia cant keep any secrets from her mom. She doesnt allow her to go to school or have any friends. Another peculiar thing is: she forces Cordelia to do what she wants if Cordelia does not listen. The only relief Cordelia has is when her mother occasionally leaves and lets her stay home alone
"She gazed at the pages sometimes, and thought what it would like to write I hate my mother in a fierce scrawl across the pages.
She did not do it. Closing the door when she was home alone was as much rebellion as she dared. If she had written something so terrible, she would have been made obedient for weeks, perhaps a month. She did not think she could stand it for so long."
Then, something changes. Her mother comes back and says that they have to leave the house and go and convince a wealthy older man to marry her. Mind you, they leave after a suspicious death in the small town nearby their house AND this house is the place of the only human friend Cordelia has. Her other friend is Falada, her mother's beautiful white horse.
In the new house, the Squire (wealthy older man) and his unwed sister, Hester welcome Cordelia and her mother. However, Hester starts to get suspicious of Cordelia's mother and the plot takes it from there. This book is filled with murder, scary but friendly spirits, a betraying familiar and an ending that is satisfying for this gothic fantasy book.
Thank you to Netgalley, the author and the publisher for this eArc in exchange for my honest opinion.
