This book is so important to me... I will never forget the first time I read it. "I didn't believe I could exist in anyone's memory but my own" is one of my favorite book moments ever
I feel like the author googled "symptoms people with anxiety and depression experience" and just put that all into a character. SO heavy handed, so one-note
3.5 ⭐ idk how the author filled up 250 pages of just a girl wandering through the wilderness but... She did and she ate!!
I really liked how cosmic and weird this got but was able to reel itself back in. Great read to end October
3.5 ⭐ I don't read enough books with Native characters and I super liked that aspect, the Native stories and history the author used in this were super compelling and made for a great plot. The writing was great, the MCs processing of grief was super believable. It was just slow going and imo the ending wasn't anything special.
Sooo so underrated - I loved every part of this and felt like every queer character was written with love
This is not Trans 101 - there is advanced trans humor and discourse in this novel. I really enjoyed the writing, time switches and character work. The discussions and critiques of gender, especially femininity, were nuanced and interesting. I actually somewhat agreed with Reese's ideas about women and violence. Obviously, there are some controversial statements in this book, I think they were done well. As Peters says herself, it's very much a book written for trans people (specifically, trans women). I still found this pretty relatable.
The only thing I was put off by were the points about race, they were pretty shallow and forced. Sometimes the way Reese and Ames talked about Katrina's pregnancy, and how they used her body, were uncomfortable.

Reread for class - still not my favorite but the fact that this is one of the most banned books in US schools is insane
