Amazing story of Black familial trauma and resilience, my favorite part was "The Son", the prose is amazing
I loved it but the ending was so unsatisfying to me!! Still giving it 5 stars, a really beautiful book
The last chapter had me gagged, soso purposeful, intimate, and smart
Been going back and forth on my opinion but I've decided not to be a hater I think I liked it
Really enjoyed this :3 suspenseful and interesting story, liked the political satire (even though it was heavy handed sometimes), liked the first person POV, the ending wasn't my fave but don't know what I would have preferred... This was a good lighthearted-ish introduction to R.F. Kuang!!
Loved the art style. The stories, harder to follow but still worth it for the endings. 3.5 ⭐
I'll read anything Tillie Walden makes - I love the way she makes her characters and settings interact with each other. I just wish this was longer
Worth the hype? I think so, but something was missing. I don't see this sticking with me in the same way "The People in the Trees" has. This one is long, overwritten, and super depressing, but still showcases Hanya Yanagihara's amazing ability to write and create characters.
Underrated aspect of this book: the setting, I loved the descriptions of NYC/all the other places in this book, of their apartments and houses, of the restaurants and galleries they attend, their workplaces, etc. It added so much to the story. This year I'm realizing setting is almost as important as characters are to me when reading. Another random thing is her ability to choose character names. For some reason each name of a character whether they be an MC or secondary just flows really well, interacts with the others well and looks good on the page. Idk how she does it

First 6 or so stories I didn't care about, after that they were much more enjoyable and thoughtful. There are a couple I would definitely give 5 ⭐, but not consistent enough as a collection. I enjoyed it a lot more than "Fever Dream", I think I like her style more in short story form
