A loving husband and father steps out of his house one afternoon to buy a nail ... and completely disappears! What can have happened?!

This wasn't a hugely plausible story even at the time according to contemporary reviews, and it still requires serious suspension of disbelief today. However, the characters are well-written, the plot has a good pace with plenty of twists, and overall it's worth a read if you have a rainy Sunday afternoon to fill.
