I can confidently say: I was touched. I don't know if I was moved, but in another life I'm sure there's a version of me, either in another universe or that lives hidden in the back of my own mind now, who would have weeped. Maybe I was moved. I get it. I think I know what that feels like.

I'm not ashamed to say it: Hot monster.

Pet, I mean, is hot, not the actual monster of the book.

But then we find out Pet is an angel, so double hot. And an angel that kills? Triple hot!!! A righteous angel that can eventually be reasoned with and see the good in letting humans learn to be better and do better without having to exact justice on behalf of victims without due process?! This is just gonna keep going, I have to stop myself now.

The author said Black lives matter! It's minor, and it's only one sentence, and it's the bare minimum, but I wasn't expecting that. It made me smile. That was pretty cool.

Very good book. I don't have any experiences with cults but as someone who was raised in a religion and fell out of it as a pre-teen for reasons like doubt and questioning, it didn't take me reading the author's note to know this was written from a very personal experience. And that is such a strength of the book. It's not something that feels cold, like it was researched case by different case, with examples being mashed together to form some sort of out of touch mockery of a similar story. No, it really feels like someone's true heart and mind reflecting on their inner turmoil finally put to page. With a topic this serious, explaining the details of the this and the that for shock value never do it for me. But this book is so very intimate, and so very vulnerable; so very clearly told through the eyes of a vulnerable teen who just wanted to make the world a better brighter place. It's not her fault she was hurt and lied to, it's not her fault the circumstances of how she found out, and later on she chose how to tell her story on her own terms. Or, at the very least, a story close enough to how she was feeling. And it's amazing. Certainly a book I would recommend!

The r-word is used 3 times in the final story of the book. The word "queer" is used in every. single. story. to mean odd or strange.

There's a perpetual emptiness floating through the stomachs of these stories. I liked it, even though I only really liked the first 2 stories and only kinda liked another one. (Beverly girl you would've loved Stay Soft by Mitski.) I don't care enough to do research into the stuff she talks about, but it really does feel like she did her research!

Many grammatical errors. Many formatting errors. The pages aren't even numbered! But it's not unreadable. The poems were very lovely, very sweet, and very enjoyable.

This isn't a negative of the book but this is my first nonfiction reading that isn't for a class, and I'm just realizing all nonfiction books are very repetitive.

Oh yeah, this book is goonna go down in history for, at the very least, almost perfectly capturing the feelings we had during the moments we lived through between November 2019 and August 2021. I'm always a sucker for time travel in movies and tv, but mixing the distant past with the present? More than that, using the direct words of the past as if they were said in the present?! Future historians, it's all here. It's all there. It's all real. It made me uncomfortable a couple times but that's because the wound is still fresh. As said in some of the poems, it's still ongoing. I'm sure I'll read this again in 10 20 30 60 years with a familiar hindsight and vague rememberance, and probably feel as sick to my stomach as I feel now. But, not a bad sick. A sad sick. Mourning sickness. We'll never not mourn, even if we forget. But with this book at least a part of us will always remember.
