Set in a Massachusetts Shaker community in 1842, this story is about Polly, a young girl escaping from a horrific childhood, finding refuge as a new believer in the City of Hope. All her life she has found a kind of spiritual escape from her father's abuse, and when she is safe at the City of Hope, she experiences variations of those visions and is identified as a Visionist (someone who receives direct word from Mother Ann the founder of the Shakers).
All is not well or as it seems with Polly, and the secret she is running from pursues her along with others who would benefit from finding her. Even her "safety" within the City of Hope isn't a certainty.

The eighth novel in author Steve Berry’s Cotton Malone series of international adventures/political intrigue all wrapped around an historical person, event, or historical relic. Berry transitions his stories from today with US government operative turned book seller Cotton Malone to whatever historical time period his story is based. This novel focuses on a secret of the Tudor times of Henry the VIII and Elizabeth I. From the CIA to British MI 6 to Malone’s own family the action is fast-paced while Berry recounts English history. While a little repetitive it is a good read. 3 ½ stars.
