MIRAGE is Number 9 in The Oregon Files series featuring Juan Cabrillo who is “Chairman” of the “Corporation” a secret US government group operating in the Oregon a high tech ship disguised as a commercial vessel. Packed with the usual Cussler action an intriguing plot nuance involves Nikola Tesla and his inventions from long ago. Add modern Russian bad guys and it keeps Juan and the crew hopping. Three and a Half Stars.

This book has it all: romance, suspense, lush settings in China, Paris and ancient Egypt, and a hefty dose of the supernatural. It also contains well-researched information about the history and craft of perfume, which adds an unusual and interesting dimension to the book. An enjoyable page-turner.

Originally published as a shorter paperback version in 1975, this 2013 re-write doubles the length. While touted by the publisher as a rip-roaring adventure, this is a fairly tame but interesting Holy Grail quest—thus the title.
Two veteran journalists with a tag along female photographer who becomes the center of their love triangle meet a long imprisoned monk in the jungles of Ethiopia who before he dies tells a fantastic tale of having seen the Grail itself. The ancient relic is hidden in the jungle in a black stone fortress guarded by monks.
The author obviously has to place obstacles in their path—nasty tribesmen, a maniacal general and the jungle itself. The interlude back at the Vatican is too long and takes away from the story but all in all an interesting twist on the Grail quest.
