I have loved the three books by Tana French that I have listened to. I recently re-read In the Woods in preparation for a book discussion and I really missed the Irish narrative voice. Not that I didn't still enjoy the book, but something was missing for me in the experience of just reading. The atmosphere and the emotion weren't as apparent to me in the act of reading the book.

However, I listened to most of this book, which tells Frank Mackey's back story which sort of explains why he is such a taciturn and hard-drinking man.

The suitcase found in an abandoned house in his old neighborhood turns out to be that of Rosie Daly, the girl he had planned to run away to England with twenty-some years earlier. When she didn't show up on the night they planned to leave, he had assumed for his entire life that she had ditched him and was living her own life in England.

Now Frances Mackey has to return to his miserable old neighborhood and his bitter family to help figure out what had really happened to his lovely Rosey.

Ellen's review: Scorcher Kennedy, a minor character in French's previous books, has a newbie partner in the high profile murder of almost an entire family in Broken Harbor, a place of personal significance for himself.

As the partners examine the evidence, interview the neighbors and find a suspect, tension develops between the detectives and continues to build until the ending. I was so involved in this book by the end that I had to switch from the audio version to the actual book because I just had to find out how it would end.

French's characters are so well-developed and the narrator was so good that I could completely everything and everyone as if I were watching a movie. A very good movie. Highly recommended.

St. Kilda’s is an Irish boarding school in the Dublin suburbs where Chris Harper, a 16-year-old boy from a neighboring boys’ school, was murdered a year ago. Now it’s a cold case and Detective Stephen Moran gets a surprise postcard that says “I know who killed him” from the daughter of Detective Frank Mackey.

Detective Moran heads to St. Kilda’s School to question the girls from two rival groups about the mysterious postcard pinned to the board called The Secret Place where girls can privately share secrets. Moran and Detective Conway have to sift through teenage rivalry, rumor and gossip to get to the truth behind the crime.
