“why did you leave your daughters?”
“i loved them too much and it seemed to me that love for them would keep me from becoming myself”
ferrante! never! misses!

i know it's only january, but i think i just read my fav book of the year. if i could give this book more than five stars, i would. how ali smith captures the beauty and misery and joy and wretchedness of humans and art and language and humour is astonishing. this was by far my fav book in her seasonal quartet and fav one of her oeuvre that i've read so far. the characters from the previous books showing up and interacting with the new ones warmed my heart like the summer of 1989. especially daniel. he might be one of my most beloved characters ever written. i am so grateful to live in a time where ali smith is writing books
my mother once told me that james joyce wanted dubliners to be such a vivid depiction of the city, that if dublin were to disappear overnight, it could be reconstructed from these short stories alone. mission accomplished imo
a feet-kickingly cute story with surprisingly well-developed characters. did it have to be 400+ pages and need multiple time jumps? no but whatever, it was fun
it’s like if you told virginia woolf to write an elena ferrante novel. absolutely bizarre and absolutely gorgeous. women going insane remains my fav genre
i would like to thank the universe for making me live in a time where i get to read ali smith’s novels. bellissima
some absolute bangers and will absolutely be reading more of his work. (rating would’ve been higher if it wasn’t for all the dead animal imagery lol)
i find myself so sad that this is emily brontë's only novel. i can't wait to reread it again and again.
