I started reading this for a church thing a couple years ago and I probably should have finished it then because the pace of awfulness has been breakneck recently. Sigh...
Wildly imaginative. And also the first time in a long while I've read a book that's a solid two or more grade levels above my reading level.
Very good, if brutally exhausting. Makes me wish I had the original French to compare it to. Also makes me want to pick up a history book about the topic.
I'm not sure how much of it is me and the genre but the second half felt like it brought up a lot of serious stuff and then never really resolved it. But the couples cute I like them together and I thought the flirting was cute and the beyond flirting steamy
Does what it sets out to do. And what it sets out to do is impressive.
It's a real tear jerker which is obviously on purpose. There are a few elements that just didn't work for me.
I think this is one of the better Verne books because there's very little interaction with other cultures for the imperialism to get gross during. Now of course it does have the lack of women and explorer lit problems . It also has a wordiness problem that Verne generally shows in his work. I wish that the debunked nature of the science here allowed for more remakes because this basic arrangement could be really cool with a long look at colonial issues and A. Modern. Editor.
