Plot or Character Driven: Plot

Most of my friends that read this after reading the original trilogy say that they're disappointed by it. And while I do prefer the original trilogy so far, I'm not disappointed by this book at all.

The coolest part about it is seeing this world and how it grew (and even what remained the same) after an era of relative peace. The sci-fi lover in me also appreciated seeing how they were able to build technology around and with the magic, in ways that they couldn't or that were suppressed in the times of the final empire. And it was cool seeing the events in the first series treated as history, mythology and new religions here.

So far it does feel significantly lower-stakes than the first series, which I think is what could make it feel disappointing to some. For example, it's hard to feel too invested in a story where some lives are at stake after coming from a story where the fate of the whole world was at stake.

But maybe it would feel like too much to come from one set of world-ending events straight into a new set of world-ending events. Events of that scale need time to build, so maybe we need the foundation of the relatively peaceful world that was built by Harmony first to truly understand the impact of larger-scale events to come.

It's hard to review this in a vacuum, since I feel like my opinion on this book would depend on the payoff in future books for the mysteries they're setting up here.

But what I did like the most about this book was the worldbuilding (in the form of the new lore for creatures that existed in the previous trilogy, and how they fit into this new world), and the build-up of the story. The first book was interesting in that it was cool to see how this world and the powers grew over the centuries, but it did feel low-stakes compared to the previous trilogy. This book starts to go into the larger implications of the events of the series, and I'm left excited to see where it could lead.

However, the main aspect that's holding me back from loving this series as much as the first is the characters. To me, Wax feels more like a typical fantasy book protagonist, so he just doesn't feel as real to me as Vin and the others, who had clear flaws and who I got to see grow over time. And the story and characters treat him as such an important figure, with seemingly no justification. For Vin, it was clear in the beginning and especially by the end that things about her made her so special and central to the story. I don't feel that yet with Wax, which makes it feel somewhat forced. Maybe later on we'll learn more information to make that make sense, but I'm not fully buying that an essentially normal person like Wax could be so central in the matters of immortals and gods.

I actually thought this was my second time reading the series, but based on my reading history I realized I'd only read until issue #42 out of 50! I didn't own the Omnibus at the time, so maybe I just didn't realize I missed some crucial final issues.

This really is one of my favorite Marvel runs, because I love the unlikely pairing of these two different personalities, who are both controversial figures within the Marvel universe in very different ways. As someone who reads Marvel but doesn't follow the stories as they come out, I also appreciate how, while this series does reference events going on in other parts of the Marvel universe, it still has an overall plot that is coherent all on its own, and resolves major story arcs for both title characters.

I used to consider this series a 4-star read, but after this (mostly) reread, I ended up loving it so much I had to bump it up to 5 stars. Maybe I'll change my mind after some time, but for now I can't help but consider this one of my favorites.
