so i’m confused ... this is a children’s book????? i never read this as a child but reading this as an adult is surprising because i can see how dark and weird some of the themes are. it’s also very endearing, if i’m being honest.

It seems so insignificant, because what I feel for her is bigger than the sky. The whole fucking planet. You could go all the way to outer space and there still wouldn’t be enough ways to show her how much I adore her.

i adored emmy hartwell so much, my sweet girl. maverick miller is obviously a man that was written by a woman because he’s too perfect. as much fun as this was, the author is a good writer but she needs something new because the friends-with-benefits trope is overused and is in pretty much all her books.

Because to really integrate into a culture, I can tell you that you have to disintegrate first, at least partially, from your own. You have to separate, detach, dissociate. No one who demands that immigrants make “an effort at integration” would dare look them in the face and ask them to start by making the necessary “effort at disintegration.” They’re asking people to stand atop the mountain without climbing up it first.

originally written in french, the english translation did not flow well at times and i could tell some things were lost in translation but this was still profoundly compelling and powerful in it’s storytelling.

In a world of what ifs and endless possibilities, he and I are a definite yes.

single dad x nanny trope? i will eat it up!!! especially when the child plays a big part in the story and isn’t just an accessory/background character. this was so cute and the healthy communication between maven and dallas?? so refreshing. this was such a feel-good story.

The best liars … were the ones who were also lying to themselves in some way. They’d lie so much to others; it was too easy to also eventually convince their own minds of the lie.

was this story a perfect happily-ever-after masterpiece? no. but was it realistic masterpiece? i actually think, yes. it was a rollercoaster of emotion and i am still overwhelmed.

sade hussein was a biased, perfectly imperfect character and narrator of this story. she was constantly anxious, a little insecure in herself, and a lot guilt-and-grief-ridden after surviving and living through so much at such a young age. despite that, i found her to be an impressively profound main character because she was unapologetically herself throughout the story and stuck to her morals in finding out the truth about the darkness that lurked within the walls of the elite boarding school she enrolled in.

Keep swimming. Or if that’s too hard, at the very least, float.

this may be a controversial opinion but i did not hate the ending. to me, the ending of this book was a realistic representation of how the rich, powerful (white) privileged boys and men get away with atrocities while the girls and women, who are most often the victims and survivors, are either blamed, silenced, and left to float and go on about their lives on their own as if nothing happened; or all of the above.

it felt like the right way to end the book, because after such a compelling story—with so many complex and controversial side characters—intriguingly sinister and dark mysteries, it leaves you wishing everything could end perfectly, but like life, it doesn’t; and i find that to be more riveting.

“Forever is a long time,” I say. “And it still wouldn’t be long enough. I love you so very much. I think maybe I’ve always loved you,”

i loved watching shawn and lacey’s friendship grow and turn into more. their communication was so endearing and refreshing and seeing them fall in love with each other was so heartwarming. one of the best friends-to-lovers romance i’ve read to date.

“My life was boring until I met you. Now all I see are colors, and light, and your beautiful, perfect face.”

i went into this not knowing what to expect and found it to be an unexpectedly sweet, hot, and funny novella.

Baggage. No one ever breaks free from it. Everyone has to figure out how to go on living, to be decent, in spite of it.

despite it being well written, this story—especially the plot—was not what i was expecting, especially based on the blurb we were provided. though the author is definitely talented with her writing and kept me captivated throughout the entire book.

like wow… the protagonist was a hot mess. deeply flawed and complicated character. this book touched on a subject i have heard little about: love addiction, something that the character lives with. the way it was talked about throughout the story felt bold, but careful and impactful. that being said, i’m still a little bit confused as to what the whole point of the story was? it felt mostly like (beautiful and frustrating) ramblings and the protagonist’s constant self-destructive behaviors, with barely any self-improvement, left me feeling exhausted and sad for her in the end.
