WHY OH WHY DO I LOVE THIS SERIES SO MUCH? Becky Chambers has, once again, managed to make me lose my mind. My thoughts are being put into words — it’s beautiful and wonderful and horrible and terrifying.
“You don’t have to have a reason to be tired. You don’t have to earn rest or comfort. You’re allowed to just be.”

As a sideline fan of BTS (like…I listen to them, and thanks to my students, I know quite a bit about the members), I didn’t learn much from reading this memoir. It’s a mix of interviews and a timeline-retelling. While it does mention “highs” and “lows” of the group, there isn't a huge amount to take away as a reader.
It is basically a printed version of the love that the members have already put into their music and interactions. Which has its purpose!
But, on top of that, it wasn’t necessarily translated in top quality. Many thoughts felt half-finished and better questions could have been asked.

I get it — I get why people love this book and hate this book, and I get that I’m not this book’s target audience. I picked it up because it’s a beloved YA story that I believe some of my students can relate to and enjoy. I wanted to read it so that I could recommend it to the right kids.
For some pieces of dialogue (ie Gus), I was visibly cringing. It’s sooooo teen-based language in a sense that they are /different/ and /cool/ and I have taught these kids before. They’re funny to listen to, and they’re still growing up, but to see it written in quotation marks? Ayyy second hand embarrassment.
The development of family dynamics and the tangling of friendships was beautifully done, however. Absolutely loved Hazel’s parents and felt my heart ache for them.
The Fault in Our Stars is written well and the plot flows easily. I’ve picked up a second-hand copy and it will make an appearance in my classroom for my students to enjoy.

For what it is, it is good. Stinks of YA, you know? Which isn't bad! I did watch the the TV show before reading the book, so I was...surprised by some of the changes.
Did I like Alina? No. Did I like Mal or The Darkling? Definitely not. Did I like...anyone? Genya, kind of. Baghra, definitely.
The world-building is delightful, though! It was given to us in manageable chunks and grew throughout the story. I'll read the next in the series, and I do look forward to eventually meeting the Six of Crows!
