Really adored this middle-grade book about an aspiring witch and her journey to prove herself worthy. Very much a fun, bright enjoyable book, it has shades of Kiki's Delivery Service, The Worst Witch books, and Harry Potter throughout, and the fact it works well as a one-off and as the first part of a series/duology/trilogy is a delight - I can't wait to read the next installment.

The best steampunk-Victorian-era novel about a synesthete composer, his kind clairvoyant husband, their stoic adopted daughter, and their pet clockwork octopus, journeying to Japan to deal with politics and investigate strange electrical and weather phenomena and a resurgence in ghosts. An absolute stunner of a novel that will warm your heart, then break it, and then gently place it all back together, more beautiful than before.
