Wow. What a story. What a great story for kids to read. What I thought was just a fantastical story is so so much more. Assumed safety, courage, bravery, realizing the monsters are often those we would never suspect , and so many more important life things.
I love how the story started off in a utopian town and quickly spiraled into this cute dystopian novel.

For a book with the word “fun” in it, this was not fun.
The writing is great. The story is done well.
Fellow white people, I hope you pick this up and take it to heart. The author did a wonderful job making this story feel so real. It feels like a friend could have told me this happened. I think it was really smart how the white main characters both say each other is racist. The visual drawn of them pointing at each other with blame is perfect. We are all part of the problem.
BIPOC friends:
I wouldn’t dream of telling non-white people to read this. To anyone not white, this book is full of traumatic shit. If you don’t want the triggers of racism, appropriation, and all that comes with it, skip this book. Know that it may be a good suggestion for your white friends and move on. Please go read something that won’t be painful.
Overall, I honestly wish this story had told us more about our main character and less about the overtly racist secondary characters. Though, I understand that would’ve changed the point the author was trying to make.

I listened to 90% of the book on a long drive. This book was so slow in the beginning that I almost didn’t continue. Though, it did do a lot of building up the characters so we understood their relationship.
I thought this story was interesting. I like how the story revolves around two gay 17 year olds and yet the story wasn’t really about that. There were enough details of how they were treated to see how they could be so violent and hateful.
In the end, as I assume the author intended, I am left unsure which character was bad or at least worse than the other.
Overall, this story wasn’t super exciting for me. I’m not a huge fan of slow books with excessive detail. This one felt like there was a lot of detail in the beginning, then lacking in detail at the meat of the story.
I’d love to see a similar story done with the morally gray main characters.

All too real on the details and horrors of capitalism and the crap way workers are treated. This part of the story felt so incredibly real that it hurt to listen to. Sci-fi is one of my least favorite genres. I was surprised to find that I enjoyed listening to this story. It was short and cute. Not so far fetched that it was hard to follow. It was interesting and I kept wanting more.
This is the first sci-fi book I’ve read with a woman main character and and a non-binary main character. I think this helped keep my interest
