A fresh take on the rom-com. Or at least I think it is, I must admit that is not a genre I am well versed in.
This is the typical book about a woman whose husband cheats on her, the marriage ends, and she leaves town. In the process, she finds another man.
But here is how it is not that typical book. It's not sappy.
What I really enjoyed about his book, was the real emotions and thoughts of Thea. Thea ended up in Scotland, from inheriting her Uncle's home. She didn't intend to stay. As she is navigating her newly single life, Thea decides to spend the summer in Scotland. She decides to get a job. Over time she develops friendships. Meanwhile we see her question why her husband cheated, but also realize that it was on him and not her. As her and the bookstore owners' relationship deepens, Thea is at first ignorant of the idea that she is desireable, but mostly because she doesn't believe she is ready for a relationship. When she finally realizes that she loves Edward and they decide to enter a relationship, she doesn't just jump in blindly. She has hesitations and thinks about realities. To me, this made the book so relatable.

Spoiler. I feel I have to put a trigger word in the spoiler. TW: SUICIDE
I should have seen it coming. But didn't until very late.
Otherwise it was a quirky book with quirky characters.

An interesting concept, A Choose-Your-Own-Gender book. However, I felt this book was more about exploring the history of gender, than to help someone who was questioning their gender.
There are many facts presented as well as terminology, however I feel that this book was more theoretical as to showcasing what a chosen path would actually look like. No real life testimonials to show how people are really living. I think the most used phrases in the book are "you might ..." and "maybe you..."
The nature of the choose-your-own style of book also led to a ton of repeating knowledge. I started skimming after a while.

A delightful book that was a great palate cleanser from the heavy books I have been reading.

One of the things I love about YA books, is they get right into the heart of the stories. No lengthy lead ins.
This is such a sweet story about a girl, Evie, who, at such a young age, has become cynical about love and doesn't believe it is something that is real and lasting. This is due to her having caught her father cheating on her mom. Once a reader of romance books, she abruptly gives them all away in a free library. Mysteriously, a woman shows up to talk to her, and she suggests that Evie take a book in the library. The only book is about how to dance. Her friend convinces her that this is a sign that she needs to go to the dance studio and see it through. Magic ensues and Evie is "gifted" the ability to see relationships; beginning, middle, and end. She views this as a curse. And as she only focuses on the endings, she hates this, and feels that it proves her point.
Through the story, we see Evie start a romance, even though she denies it to herself. She also learns about forgiveness and that not all endings are bad.

Beautiful beautiful art work. Watercolor paintings to go along with prose.
This is the second book I read by Kazuo Ishiguro. Both have been character driven novels, vs plot.
In this one, we follow Klara, an artifical intelligence robot designed to be a companion to teenagers. She is bought by a family with an ill child. Over time we realize the true purpose of why Klara was chosen for this family.
Glimpses are given into the larger world and what changes have happened with technology, but this is not the focus of this narrative. The main theme is exploring what distinguishes us from advanced AI and could robots replace humans.
I wouldn't read this as sci-fi lit, but more as a character study with the sci-fi setting.

This book is worth it for the watercolor illustrations alone. Each entry has several pages of art and an acrostic poem
Written in verse, a story of a young girl in a ICE detention center. From her perspective.
Definitely some parts that tear your heart out ans stomp it to the ground. While this is a work of fiction it portrays the conditions undocumented immigrants faces while in US detention centers.
