A morality tale with the gutterball guards on. It reads like a middle aged woman telling her kid about the "crazy" summer she had so that her kid thinks she is cool, but edits it so that they "don't get any ideas"- and throws in that she was besties with the coolest kids on the island for good measure. Solid writing and actually well edited, but holy hell was it repetitive, even for a murder mystery. It was too afraid to go where it wanted and brave enough to not explain itself, like, at all.

Emotional but lovely. The story and the writing were beautiful. The peripheral characters needed a little more refinement, but our mains were incredibly solid. The pacing was great for a debut author and publisher, but has room to grow. I am excited to see what Kay writes next!

A perfect ending to a perfect series. (But I will always take more of Greta. I'll Rumplestiltskin my first child for more.)

There is paying homage to The Bard, and then there's trying to update every beat. There is something so earnest about trying to update Romeo and Juliet for modern teens and I respect the hell out of the effort. However, something about this just fell flat. Maybe it was the inconsistent editing (some regional food explained for white people, usually the most popular, but not others; characters repeating actions), maybe it was simply how goofy some of the trade-ins were for events in the original play (food poisoning for actual poison)... it just wasn't quite right yet. Publishing trends currently speak to speed and efficiency over creating the best art possible, but this would have shone with another pass or two. I'm looking forward to seeing what else the author can do.
