Betty Bites Back: Stories to Scare the Patriarchy
Demitria Lunetta, Mindy McGinnis, Kate Karyus Quinn
With stories ranging from fantasy to contemporary, this fantastic feminist fiction collection proves that Betty not only bites, but she can also occasionally feast on the tender, soft spots of man. From flash fiction length to poetry to longer stories, this collection has many styles, yet each author perfectly hits the mark on staying true to the theme. While most of the collection wouldn't necessarily scream feminist fiction on its own, the compilation proves to be more than the sum of its parts.

Dead Ringer is #5 in the Gaslight Gothic series, proving once again that Kat Ross has the writing chops to go the distance. I hopped on the review tour initially for A Bad Breed and then The Necromancer's Bride and here I am with Dead Ringer. While A Bad Breed and The Necromancer's Bride are a slight detour in the series, following different characters and readable as a stand-alone, Dead Ringer is back with Harry.

If it isn’t obvious by now, I fall head over heels for a second chance romance…and a whole book of them? All I can say is gimme, gimme, gimme! I wasn’t disappointed in this collection of do-overs by all these talented authors. While there weren’t any that I didn’t enjoy, a couple of them stood out over the others.
Weather or Knot by Tracy Brogan was fun for all kinds of reasons. First, meteorologists aren’t the usual romance MCs. There were so many weather-related love puns, and I guess I’m a geek, but they made me giggle a little every time. Like “…just like having your ex-fiancee show up in your driveway, tornadoes were unpredictable.” (It’s the little things really!) Unlike a lot of second chance romance, there wasn’t a whole lot of drama in the backstory, just two people who were young and were influenced to choose another life over the one they had. Allie broke it off with Dylan to pursue her career. She worked so hard to get through school and didn’t want to let her parents down and let her career take a back seat. When they meet up again to go chase storms together, it’s not just the weather that’s captivating! Like rainbows after the storm, Weather or Knot delivers a sunshine-y HEA!

I’ve actually never read anything by Kristen Proby so this was my introduction to her writing. I’m not typically drawn to contemporary romance or thriller type romances but when I saw the paranormal aspect of Shadows, I was very interested.
Shadows is one of a trilogy, each following one of the sisters. This one following the eldest sister, a ghost tour host in good ol’ New Orleans, who just happens to be able to really see ghosts. When a new shadow suddenly appears in her path and follows her home, she teams up with FBI agent to find out exactly what the shadows want.

I wasn't sure about this series to start with, but hey, it was on Kindle Unlimited and I needed a book to read. Plus, that cover is pretty eye-catching in a dark and gritty urban fantasy kind-of-way. In spite of the blurb promising that it wasn't weird weird, it sounded weird weird. Was this some sort of BDSM reverse harem? Not that I'm knocking it. If that's your thing, you do you, boo.
The premise of the series is a girl (we never know her as anything but Pet) has been hiding out in her house after her parents were killed. Even though Pet was in the house the night her parents were killed, she managed to not hear or see anything.

The tagline on the cover is "A snarky urban fantasy detective series". Well, I freaking love snark. Snark's my favorite. And UF detectives are decidedly a weak spot for me so off I went requesting!
Set in Vancouver, Canada, Ashira Cohen is a mundane; that is, she has no magical powers. In a world where you are classified as Nefesh(magic) or mundane, being an ordinary PI is unquestionably a handicap. When she gets a head injury on a case, she discovers a tattoo hidden in her hair — a tattoo that has apparently been putting the kibosh on magical abilities she didn't know she had. Between hunting down who was behind her unconsented ink and investigating the disappearances of both mundane and Nefesh teens, she has her work cut out for her.

Tales From the Fringes of Fear is a middle-grade read but don't let that stop grown-up you from picking this one up as well. While the stories are fantastically fearsome for the younger crowd, they are still engaging enough for the young-at-heart.
Within these pages is an abundance of hair raising anecdotes that are as distinct as if they'd be written by different hands. For an author to have created a compilation of stories that reads more like an anthology is impressive. No two tales read the same. With different themes, tones, and characters, each story will resonant with younger readers.
