I don’t think I can hang with the chaotic stream of consciousness.

 - Listen, if something is inspired by Mad Max Fury Road, I’m gonna read it, and I’m so glad I found ROAD TO RUIN.
- It’s about magic and class and power and secrets and love, and I tore right through it.
- I’d say this book is closer to the YA end of the scale of books in terms of character building. It’s more about the vibes and emotions than deep world building or complex character growth.
- We love not only sapphic yearning, but hints at poly yearning! Book two, please!

 - I picked up MADNESS because I was both shocked and not shocked to have ever heard of Crownsville, which is more or less in my backyard. I am grateful Hylton wrote this book and spoke to people who had lived and worked there, as those people are now quite old.
- Hylton draws a straight line through slavery to institutionalization to industrial prisons, and the collective mental health of Black Americans throughout the decades.
- It is really incredible what Hylton has unearthed here, amplifying the work locals have done to ensure that those who lived and died at Crownsville are not forgotten.

Thanks to Macmillan Audio for the free copy of this book.

 - It’s surprisingly (not so surprisingly) hard to find an addiction and recovery memoir that isn’t written by a white person, and FIRST IN THE FAMILY gets into the many reasons why that is.
- Hoppe blends memoir with facts and figures about how addiction was treated in her family and among people of color more broadly; specifically, how BIPOC experiences are purposefully erased from the mainstream frameworks of recovery.
- Hoppe reads the audiobook, and is such an engrossing and emotive narrator.
