this novella is pure folklore. i loved every (short) second of it.
it features:
- sentient forests
- monsters in the woods
- grumpy + sunshine
- badass mothers
- an adorable cat
go read it and thank me later.

i preferred “silver in the wood” slightly more, but this is just as atmospheric and beautifully written and i—i absolutely suck at writing reviews, but if you loved “silver in the wood”, if you want more silver and tobias, if you’re interested in witnessing one of most realistic portraits of depression ever written in a book, if you love projecting your fears and hopes into other people (it’s alright, silver, we all do that), if you have ever dreamt of shuffling off society and becoming a Wild Person, if you like old badass folklorist ladies and young badass the witcher-wannabe ladies, if you trust me, just… read it.
my one complaint about this series? it is too short. it’s the perfect length for the story it wants to tell, but i just wish i had… more. i’ll take anything, really. scribbled notes. smoke in the sky. a doodle.

fuck.
there’s a lump in my throat. courtney summer does not pull any punches. this was one of the most discomforting books i’ve ever read. i highly recommend it to everyone. (check the triggers though.)
i also highly recommend the audiobook. it’s a full cast production and one of the best i’ve ever read.
