it's been almost a week since i've finished this book, and i still cannot find the words to describe everything it meant to me.

--------

victoria says she's been writing this book forever which is just fine because i've been waiting for it forever too.

"what my uncle said made me think. i had resented america, too. but by reading their books, i saw the other side of them—their humanity. somehow i was sure that if people were willing to read each other, and see the light of other cultures, there would be no war on earth."

a poignant, beautiful, earnest, brutal view on the vietnam war and its effects on the vietnamese.

this is most solid ya anthology i’ve ever read. highly recommend it.

twelve years later, i reread this book. and it’s just as fun as i remembered.

(some things such as fatphobic comments, comparing black and brown skin colour to food, and lack of diversity are, of course, a sign of when it was written and how much the author has learned with the years. it’s still worth mentioning, though. and i have a bone to pick with the brazilian translation, but i don’t own the books in english, so

this has a love triangle, yet i loved it.

it's written in first person, present tense, yet i loved it.

it tackled every YA fantasy trope you can think of, yet i loved it.

that should tell you how solid the writing is, how great the characters are, how fresh and unique the world it.

can't wait for the next one <3

essa novela acabou comigo.
