I actually listened to the graphic audio version of the book, and let me tell you, i’m obsessed with the format, the effects, the voice actors.
This story hooked me right in. It didn’t blow my mind or anything, but it kept me super engaged—I even finished it in one seating. The pacing is fast, which I really like because there’s no unnecessary fluff or parts that feel like filler.
I really liked the new protagonist. In this kind of urban fantasy with romance, powerful female leads are often written as super tough, like being strong means you can’t be vulnerable. But this one isn’t like that.
She’s strong, but also very human, and I don’t see that often, so I appreciated it. That said… I still enjoy reading Raegan more

I’ve really enjoyed this series overall—it definitely scratches that itch left by Ilona Andrews for urban fantasy with tough-acting protagonists who secretly just need a big hug.
But, (there’s always a but) the books focused on Penny haven’t managed to grab me as much as Raegan’s story did. I’m reading them mostly because you really have to if you want to understand the overarching plot—they’re too interconnected to skip.
The pacing of the story was actually pretty fast, but in the best way possible—it kept things moving and made it easy to stay engaged.
I wasn’t a fan of Emery and Penny’s relationship in this third book. I like Emery as a character, but their relationship felt rushed and, at times, a bit cringy. I also found myself wishing Penny’s character had grown more by the end. It felt like her good heart was too tied to her naivety. I would’ve loved to see her retain that kindness while becoming a bit less naive.
In the end, while these books didn’t captivate me as much as the Raegan-focused ones, they’re still necessary if you’re invested in the series. Skipping them would leave too many gaps in the overall story, so if you’re committed to the saga, these are a must-read—just don’t expect them to reach the same heights as Raegan’s adventures (or just read a summary or something).
That said, one thing I absolutely loved was seeing Raegan through Penny’s eyes. It was such a treat. Penny thinks Raegan is super cool, powerful, and super crazy.
