This was an enjoyable middle grade novel and I'm curious to see where the series will go. My biggest hangup is that the narration felt like it was trying to emulate Lemony Snicket but didn't quite hit the mark, and the occasional "Dear reader..." paragraphs pulled me out of the story a bit.
