I was sucked in immediately and that happens so rarely. I absolutely love the characters, especially Olga, a fierce and sensational women that was relatable and refreshing. I loved how this explored darker situations: corruption, assault, and inequality and did so in a way that teaches you but doesn't bring you down. I also enjoyed learning more about Puerto Rico and it's struggles and it's people.
Ahhhh I love it when a cozy mystery centers around food! The food always sounds delicious and then the added recipes?? Love it. I love Lila, I love the family and the nosy but well meaning aunties, and I enjoyed the mystery. While the mystery itself is predictable and set up like most other cozies, it's still a delight to read. Also, I LOVED the audiobook narrator! I didn't care for the love triangle set-up as I don't care for romances in cozies in general, buuuut it was a great first installment.
It just lacked soooo much. For a YA romcom it was a lot cringier/cheesier than normal and the characters felt forced. Idk maybe it's been a minute since I was teenager so I'm not connecting with recent youths but this felt like teenagers written by adults for sure. The romance was just so incredibly forgettable and the story didn't grab me.
This. Was. Sexy. Lately I've been on a clean romance kick and steered away from "smutty" romance but this was good smut. This was romance. This was sensuality. This was sexy. This was self love and self confidence. This was *chefs kiss.* There was some fat phobia (not by the MMC) and the actual dialogue surrounding that felt so real. READ THIS!!!!!
This felt like a hug, like sunshine, like a protective friend. I love coming of age and self discovery YA stories and this had me in my feelings. This had such a sweet, precious sapphic romance and friendships I wish I would've had in school. Be yourself and never feel like you have to hide. You're perfect as you are! ❣️
Cozies rarely make it above 3 stars for me so I was shocked that I didn't just enjoy this one but that I was invested! Tess and Gertie were quirky and sweet and pretty good sleuths. The story is a typical murder- false accusation - investigation set-up but it felt like there was some genuine investigating and character development throughout. I just really loved this a whole lot!
Lol I made it as far as I could but I'm DNFing at just over 80% and I'm still rating it because there is absolutely nothing that could make me rate it any higher, like it, or finish it. A queer Alice in Wonderland retelling?? Could've been great. Someone said this is what they think an acid trip would feel like and I 100% agree with that. I can't tell you a single thing that happens because I don't actually understand what happened in these pages. The writing choice is stylistic...and very much a choice. I thought it was confusing and a bit cringey.
ToG has been so incredibly mediocre... Boring and repetitive writing and characters.
