I’m a sucker for short tales of the dark and not always happy! I was absolutely captivated by this book and pulled thoroughly into the stories. The Witch of Duva was my absolute favorite. But my heart was also with The Soldier Prince and When Water Sang Fire! Come on Bardugo write us A Little Mermaid retelling!!! The writing was beautiful throughout, and these short stories are now embedded in my brain for all eternity!! Can’t wait for more Bardugo stuff, especially King of Scars! 😍 Review on my blog https://literarydust.wordpress.com/2017/12/04/review-language-of-thorns/
I'm just going to open up and say this book is just a jumbo of every other YA fantasy book thrown together, especially Ruined by Amy Tintera, which is a book that I loved. It also had Red Queen vibes. I think if this would have been my first YA fantasy book, I would have probably liked it a lot more. Also, throw in my most hated trope, sort of a weird love triangle, and you already have me annoyed. Actually, I'm not even sure if it was a triangle, but there were multiple kisses going on.
Another thing that bothers me is when a character is annoying and takes herself too seriously. Theo/Thora just kept on saying my people this, and I'm the queen that. She also has all these intense memories from when she was seven or younger. I feel like I can barely remember yesterday, let alone when I was five.
What was good is that the writing was really well done, and if some of the trope things would have been removed (like girl pretending she likes a guy to betray/kill him, but she really likes him) it would have been a lot better. I just need something more fresh/different. However, I would still read the next book to see what happens next...

I have been interested in the whole Salem Witch Trials situation for a long time and have wanted to visit Salem forever to see all the history. So, this book seemed pretty dang interesting. I’ll have to say this book was pretty fun! Now I will start AGAIN with my pet peeve ... love triangle! Also my favorite line ... I let out a breath I didn’t know I had been holding!!! It was clear who Sam liked more, but she still kisses them both and “likes” them both. It would have been better if Jaxon either became just a friend to begin with, or Elijah (the ghost)...she would have only had to help, not crush on. Also the group of girls that are mean to Sam are called the Descendants, so I kept thinking of that terrible Disney movie my daughter watches. 😂😂
Besides that, I really liked the story line. I had guessed the villain situation ahead of time, but that was fine. There was some cool ghosty elements, and the rash scene was so good! The ending I thought was super perfect, and loved it, so I’m not really sure there needed to be a sequel, but I’m about to start on it, so we shall see!

Okay, so there were aspects I liked better in the first book (like more of Elijah). But, there were aspects I liked better here (like more of the Descendants, especially Alice).
At first, I was like this is odd that the first book could go from the Salem Witch Trials to the Titanic. However, it worked. I’m also not sure if there is going to be another book or if this is it. If there is another book, there needs to be more of Elijah... And then Alice needs her own book!

This is the third book I have read by Shani Petroff, and I love her writing! She dashes in the right amount of humor in such cute stories! I loved Zev!!! Now let me get to Sari, Sari, Sari... I just love saying her name because it's awesome, anyway, there was numerous times I wanted to smack some sense into her. However, I loved that she felt real and how a teen would act in her situation! I kept thinking about this story after I reached the last page!!

This is definitely one of the best NA series. It's more than just swoon, there's actually a great story line here, which I find a lot of NA books lack.
At first, I was like I don't know because while the series has been an awesome ride, Remy has been my least favorite character. But Higgins made me enjoy her POV more than Amber's because of the story line between Remy and the senator. Is it wrong of me to think the senator is the hottest character? You know, being alien and all, and helping to take down humanity? But he was!
Amber and Rylen were on fire as usual when they had scenes together, loved them! The friendship bonds, and the team effort to help save their world is what made this book amazing. The way people are drawn together that normally aren't during a catastrophe made this book seem all the more real. Spectacular job to Higgins, who has made this series into my top NA books!!

This book was super character driven which I loved! Meche is cool yet she could be utterly cruel which was awesome! Sebastian (Sebos) was utterly sweet, and the moments between him and Meche were excellent, whether it was during their friendship or their fights! Daniela and her Easy Bake Oven was freaking adorable. The 1980’s chapters were filled with pure nostalgia magic. Plus, the characters got to use magic through playing records!!
