Before I go into the reasons why I didn’t enjoy this book I would like to say that the actual descriptive writing in this book is gorgeous. However, if it hadn’t been a book I had to read for book club then I wouldn’t have finished it.

I initially liked the premise of the book but soon realised that the amount of character stories in this is too much. It meant that I didn’t really get to love any of the characters as much as I possibly could have. Each chapter is just a brief snippet of that person and, for me, not enough to connect with the character. This also meant I was just not wanting to turn the pages whilst reading. I kept having to re-read pages because my mind had gone off elsewhere. It just really didn’t grab my attention.

Having said that, I would still read another book by this author because her descriptive writing choices really were beautiful at times through the book.

I liked the concept but I think it missed the mark. I especially hated the way Riley was portrayed as this nice simpleton without much else going on. There just seemed to be no real character development there. Also, Monica is shown to have changed her feelings about men and being single and that being a core lesson of the book and yet she’s then climbing over a cemetery wall to kiss the man she suddenly loves. The romance was not one I was pushing for or invested in.
I did, however, like the way the author discussed Alice and her post natal depression. I also thought the subject of addiction in its many forms was dealt with well too.

This book was THE book I needed to get out of a slump. It feels like ages since I had that feeling of excitement about a book, just finding any possible time to pick it up and read.

I found it to be a fast paced book with a storyline that kept me hooked. The characters felt real and interesting. I also loved the fact it wasn’t a fantasy book all about romance and spicy sex scenes! Yes it has a hint of romance but it doesn’t take over and it’s intricate and complicated.

I was slightly worried about how it was going to end, I was begging the author not to have finished it in a cliche way and she did not disappoint. I always know when I’ve read a book I love because I find myself grieving it after and then looking at the authors back catalogue.

This is a brilliantly written book and it’s a clear 5 stars from me.

A succinct, interesting and informative book. Perfect for fans of LOA

The author of this book is a Japanese playwright and I definitely felt like I was reading a play script. I had the image of the cafe in my head as if it was taking place on a stage and while I realise that might not be appealing to some, I quite enjoyed the different way of reading it gave me.

I can’t say I felt particularly connected to the characters in the book which is why I’ve dropped a star. However, I enjoyed the storyline and the message it was putting across. It is a bit bleak at times but that’s something I seem to find with all the books I’ve read by Japanese authors so I was kind of expecting that.

A short read, not for everyone but worth a try!
