I had some high expectations for this book since it is a prequel to one of my favorite books Code Name Verity. I wanted to see how Queenie got to the point that she could become a spy. There are a few of these elements but I still feel like that the two books just really stand on their own. That is by no means something bad but I would just have loved to see more connections.
This book taught me a lot about Scotland and the Highland Travellers which I am very happy with because I love books that can teach you something.
I think this book is great for mystery lovers who also love historical fiction.

Reread 2018: I really needed this reread before starting the finale. Odd how I remembered more of Illuminae than Gemina. On the positive side, it made the reread just as finger-biting-anxious-exciting as the first time I read it.
These files are emotional rollercoasters... yay :)

I enjoyed the most of it but during the last 30% I just didn't want to read it further. I had already seen the BBC show of 1995 so I already knew what was going to happen.
I love it when stories come full circle like this one.
I also like it when contemporary romances have something more like this one.

overall I enjoyed this book but sometimes I did not know where the story wanted to go and at other times plot twists were visible from miles ahead. and well I expect more from one of my favourite authors.
