CW: Suicidal thoughts

The Fall of Butterflies was not the book I thought it was. The main character Willa moves to a private girl school on the East Coast in the US. She plans to kill herself there. But she also meets Remy Taft there. The girls strike up a friendship.  Remy is popular, rich and peculiar. She opens up a new world to Willa. But as Remy spirals out of control, Willa can feel Remy spinning right out of her grasp.

I really enjoyed the narrative voice of Willa. It is a very sarcastic, teenage angsty narration and it worked great as an audiobook. The narration is not for everyone but I enjoyed it.

Ik heb Trots & Vooroordeel al twee keer eerder in het Engels gelezen. Deze vertaling was voor mij beter te lezen. Maar omdat ik het verhaal al zo goed ken, ging ik er maar langzaam door heen. Dat is niet erg. Ik nam mijn tijd. Af en toe een paar hoofdstukken lezen vond ik erg fijn. Vooral de laatste paar hoofdstukken vind ik nog steeds erg mooi.

I had trouble getting into the story. But I enjoyed the ending. The Archive, the Narrows and the Outer are interesting concepts and I liked most of the execution but something felt like it was missing. I missed some descriptions of the atmosphere in the Archive and, especially the Narrows. But it was a fun book.

I'm Glad My Mom Died by Jennette McCurdy is, as you probably know, McCurdy's memoir about her relationship with her narcissistic mother. Jennette McCurdy is best known for her role as Sam in iCarly. I grew up watching her. I could never have imagined her life as a child star.

McCurdy goes through her life as a child actor. She was six years old when she started. But Jennette never wanted to be an actress. It was her mother's dream, not hers. Moreover, the creator of the show iCarly was also abusive. Please buy this book so Jennette McCurdy can get more money than the $300.000 of hush money Nickelodeon offered her. She deserves it.

McCurdy herself narrates the audiobook. She tells it in such a captivating way.

The moment her voice broke, I had tears in my eyes.

So if you have the option, I highly recommend the audiobook! If not, still read this book.

Toxine is een leuke YA fantasy die ik las naar aanleiding van YALFU 2022 waar Rani de Vadder ook naar toe komt. Ik heb geluisterd naar het audioboek en ik denk dat dit de eerste keer is dat ik naar een Vlaams audioboek luisterde wat ik leuk vond. Ik luisterde het binnen twee dagen en vond het een vermakelijk verhaal. Er zaten ook een paar plottwists die ik niet had verwacht.

Quack Quack: The Threat of Pseudoscience discusses various conspiracies and misinformation, especially in the medical field. Dr Joe Schwarcz focuses on the deluge of anecdotes, cherry-picked data, pseudoscientific nonsense, and seductive baseless health claims that undermine efforts to educate the public about evidence-based science. The wide scope of the topics drawn from past and present aims to cast a life preserver to people drowning in a sea of misinformation. 

Quack Quack is a very interesting read. It is an anthology debunking pseudoscientific health claims that can lead to serious harm. I can recommend this book to anyone who loves a scientific-based approach.

The Witches of Moonshyne Manor has witches in their 80s, a magical heist and mystery. Rarely do we see elderly women star in the media. The witches live together in a big manor. But problems arise when one witch, Queenie, makes a deal with Charon just around the same time an old friend and fellow friend will return to the manor.

I quite enjoyed the book. I am glad we got to see the heist that was part of their past. The mysteries were nice. But the book is also very funny. All in all, it is a good time.

Young Avengers Vol. 1 is a fun comic. As a big MCU fan, I wanted to dip my toes into the Young Avengers because of the rumours that they are coming into the MCU. I think America Chavez was more awesome in this comic than in the movie. Hopefully, she will grow into comic America. I am curious to read the other two volumes in this series but it doesn't have high priority.

In Er zijn nog 17 miljoen wachtenden voor u bespreekt Sander Heijne de gevolgen van 30 jaar marktwerking in Nederland. Specifiek de privatiseren van publieke diensten zoals het spoor, de post en de zorg. Heijne komt met vier basisvoorwaarden waar een (staats)bedrijf aan zou moeten voldoen voordat het geprivatiseerd wordt.

Als iemand geboren eind jaren '90 vond ik het super interessant om te lezen over de kabinetten Lubbers en de Kok en hun liefde voor de neoliberale ideologie en hoe hun beslissingen tot vandaag nog steeds invloed hebben. Marktwerking zou alles goedkoper en efficiënter maken. Nu 30 jaar later is te zien dat dat niet altijd zo is. Het kan wel, bijvoorbeeld in de telefoniesector was privatisering een goede keuze. Maar bij de post, het spoor of de zorg niet.

Gelukkig zouden wij, de burgers, de aandacht kunnen vragen om deze sectoren weer terug in de publieke sector te krijgen zodat ze weer goed het belang van de Nederlandse bevolking kunnen dienen.

Ik heb veel geleerd van dit boek en vond het goed en begrijpelijk geschreven. Echt een aanrader voor iedereen.
