CW: Domestic abuse, femicide, sexism
Do you ever just feel so proud of a character? Camila, La Furia, made me burst with pride with her decisions.
In Furia, Camila wants to be a futbolera. Her family has football fever. Her brother plays at the big local club. But her family would never accept her playing football so she does it in secret. Camila has big plans for herself. She wants to play in America, where playing professionally as a woman is possible.
I enjoyed the football plays. I lived for the little bit of romance (I was very much in the mood for a YA contemporary romance and Furia delivered and more). And with a girl football team, there are some wonderful female friendships (though I wished they were explored a little more)
The book is set in Rosario, Argentina and also touches on political and feminist issues, such as femicide, abortion and domestic abuse. These topics were handled very well and show how it is always in the background. I cannot speak for Argentina since I don't live there but I think in most countries these issues are always in the back of most women's minds.
Camila's relationship with her brother and her mother was very well written and I teared up a little when her mother showed up at the game.

Spoiler
From the beginning, I found the dad to be such a dick but the more I read on I was shocked at the levels of assholery he was capable of. Also, Diego was a dick with his ultimatum and his disregard for Camila's dreams. I'm happy she want for it and showed him that she was capable of it!Camila's relationship with her brother and her mother was very well written and I teared up a little when her mother showed up at the game.
CW: death of a family member, plane crash, sexual assault
Not me thinking a book about loss would not make me cry.
Clap When You Land is about loss but also about sisterhood. When Camino's and Yahaira's father dies in a plane crash, the girls find out their father had another family. So in addition to grieving their father, they have to face a new reality.
I love Elizabeth Acevedo's writing. The way the writing and the stanza differentiate the POVs of Camino and Yahaira was amazing. I loved the bond between Camino and her Tía. I loved how everyone's emotions felt so real; Zoila's struggles with processing the death of her husband; Camino's and Yahaira's feelings towards each other in the beginning.
I can't wait for Acevedo's next book.

But most of all, I loved the ending. I love that they take Camino to New York City. I hope that she because a doctor. I would love to see more of their sisterly relationship.I can't wait for Acevedo's next book.

Thank you to NetGalley and Andrews McMeel Publishing for providing me with an e-ARC.
I love amanda lovelace's poetry. I'm aware it is not for everyone but every time I read them it feels like self-care. Flower Crowns and Fearsome Things is inspired by the Greek goddess Persephone, goddess of spring and Queen of the Underworld. I also liked the two poems related to the pandemic. This poetry collection also includes some very stunning art!

If This Gets Out is about two members of the boy band Saturday who fall in love. Do I need to say more?
I really enjoyed it. The four band members are genuine friends. I loved their interactions and the tensions made a lot of sense. I love the mentions to fandom. I really liked that they are on a European tour. Their stop in Amsterdam and their introduction to stroopwafels was precious. Zach and Ruben are really well written characters. They also balance each other quite well in the relationship.
I'd definitely recommend If This Gets Out if you have ever had a boy band phase (or still have one). The book shows the hard work and the pressure management can give the members of the band. Overall, it is such an enjoyable read that I am sure you have fun reading it.

I really enjoyed this!
This first book is more centred around the boys and their friendship and ice hockey than it is about romance. So I'd say expect a slow burn romance and to learn some things about ice hockey. I think Bitty is such a sweet person. I love that he loves to bake and that he shares it with the team. Jack, Ransom, and Holster (and their Hockey Sh*t).
Very intrigued about the second book and the romance that I'm assuming will be happening there.
You can read Check, Please! online since it started out as a webcomic: https://www.checkpleasecomic.com/comic/01-01-01 High recommend reading it like this because Ukazu sometimes has animated/GIF pages which is incredible.

The ending reminds me of Heartstopper although maybe Check, Please! might have been first or maybe it was around the same time. I loved this second volume of Check, Please! even more. This one focuses more on the relationship but the hockey team is still front and centre. And I love that. I love friendships. I love seeing the older characters grow and move on from college.
Check, Please! is such an enjoyable quick read. I'd recommend it to Heartstopper fans and if you like LGBTQIA+ contemporary fiction/graphic novels in general.

I really enjoyed Every Heart a Doorway. The novella is very whimsical. I loved the writing style. And I'm really excited to read more about the Wayward Children.
